Nothing but positives

No way I keep him over Beasley, Austin, Williams, Gallup or Hurns. I like Brown's measurables more too so Lenoir is probably gone if it's my call.
I like brown but you can’t make the team in the training room
The top 5 are locks
Then it becomes how many do we keep and who can contribute on ST to be active

Erod, great concise writeup.

I just read this quote from DLaw and had to put it in a thread somewhere, so I'll stick it in this positives thread. Maybe it's been posted but I burst out laughing, it's from the Atlantic:

“We can’t count pressures over here,” said Lawrence, who was credited with a quarterback hit. “That quarterback need to be on the ground. I felt like we had zero sacks and that’s not the ‘Hot Boys’ way. We got to be hot and we got to be blowing they a** up. Blowing them off the ball. They should want to get this game over and we didn’t do that today.”

Love that guy. Has anyone heard this "Hot Boys" name before? Maybe I haven't paid attention.

Edit: I hope this doesn't go against forum rules for language editing. It's a player quote!

I was happy with the first team offence. The offence should be better going forward. Also no Zeke and Beasley.

I was very happy with Smith, Charlton, Jones (DT), Thomas and even Armstrong last night.

I was still expecting Smith to have some rust and show some signs of still trying to get over his injury, but that one play where he exploded to the outside to tackle the RB early, really eased my concerns. He looked pretty explosive there. Hope the development continues.

Armstrong was a real standout to me in his work against backups. Showed power, some speed and agility, and a good motor.

Thomas, as the 3rd or 4th LB (depending on how LVE develops) looked very good. Good speed and awareness out there. You never want Lee to get hurt because he's so important, but knock on wood, if he does get nicked up, I am not sure there will be this massive drop off like there was last year.

Jones showed some nice quickness at DT. I still think we are a bit light at DT but at least for now, things looks decent in the middle.

Charlton looked much improved. And he never quit last night showing a constant motor.

Preseason means jack diddly nuttin. Results and successful plays tell so little of the story that you can't glean much from them at all without being on the coaching inside.

That said, last night was very encouraging for numerous reasons.

1. The defense looks fast. Really fast. The linebackers were flying around everywhere. Thomas, Jaylon, Wilson, Vander Esch....and the best one didn't even play. This was a huge area of concern for years, and now it seems to be rounding closer to where it needs to be.

2. Speaking of Jaylon, he's quite obviously healthier. He looks very different, and I'm really excited for him and about him.

3. Gallup and Lenoir. Wow, these two young dudes can run routes and catch the ball. Gallup was taught well at CSU, and Lenoir has been busting his butt the past year. They like him last year, but it didn't show up in the preseason games. Now, it is, and that's a testament to him. They both look like the anti-Dez in that regard.

4. There's going to be a tough decision on the running backs. Scarbrough looked pretty good, but Jackson looked better to my eye. I hope we don't make the mistake of cutting him loose again. Rod Smith looks quicker than last year, and he's a terrific all-around backup.

5. Tavon Austin will add another dimension to the offense. He looks like what they wanted Lucky and Switzer to be, times ten. You can also see that bounce; he's excited to be here. He will be much closer to the West Virginia dude than I thought he'd be. A new scene is what he needed.

6. Here's my favorite thing. The corners are up on the line tighter, and the safeties are more free flowing. It just gets my Earl Thomas antenna up higher because what a crowning jewel he could be for this secondary. Outside of a seeming fall-off from Jourdan Lewis, everybody looks good back there. This Kris Richard dude is the real deal.

7. Here's my second favorite thing. Dorance Armstrong was disruptive, and Taco Charlton showed some quickness and flash, too. Then, throw in Antuan Woods, who looks to be a real find in a needed spot. This will be a good group, led by Demarcus Lawrence, who can get consistent pressure, which will help that young secondary even further.

8. Our secondary coach has a glorious tan. Poster boy stuff.

9. Dak showed his gamer-ness yet again. For all his issues, he commands the offense well when the lights come on. He looks the part. That's just as important as developing his skills, and impossible to teach.

10. The best two players on the team, with apologies to Tyron Smith, didn't play, and it looked good. Depth looks more evident now outside of the tight ends. This thing isn't hanging by a thread in that regard.

Sure, there were negatives - Chaz Green, Lewis' play, Mike White - but those were just typical preseason stuff mostly from guys that aren't critical. But overall, it was a nice debut that showed promise in needed areas.

8. That's Called Melenin......not a Tan....

I also liked what I saw from Jarwin. Still struggles a bit in the blocking game but he moves pretty well when running routes.

Gathers is probably a wasted experiment at this point. Shame. Thought he might be the out of nowhere home run player some teams discover.

Lenoir made the team before last night. They absolutely love him.

I think they keep Brown, too, because he's growing into a tight end/H-back. He's got Henry Melton-itis. Melton played tailback in college; defensive tackle in the pros. Brown is an exceptional blocker, and he has good hands.

I think they keep SEVEN receivers: Hurns, Beasley, Gallup, Lenior, Williams, Brown, Austin.

That means they might keep only two pure running backs since Austin will play there, too.
Noah Brown needs to get on the field soon if he wants to make this team.

As much as we disagree on other things. That was an excellent post and I agree with a lot of what you said.

"nothing but positives". That about sums you up doesnt it.

The positive events occurred when you'd want to see then. First team vs. First team. The negatives occurred when you'd expect, 3rd team vs 3rd team. Ergo, positives win by a landslide.

Who stepped up, the defensive coaches. They put on a good show last night.

I think the RBs did what i was hoping for.
