Preseason means jack diddly nuttin. Results and successful plays tell so little of the story that you can't glean much from them at all without being on the coaching inside.

That said, last night was very encouraging for numerous reasons.

1. The defense looks fast. Really fast. The linebackers were flying around everywhere. Thomas, Jaylon, Wilson, Vander Esch....and the best one didn't even play. This was a huge area of concern for years, and now it seems to be rounding closer to where it needs to be.

2. Speaking of Jaylon, he's quite obviously healthier. He looks very different, and I'm really excited for him and about him.

3. Gallup and Lenoir. Wow, these two young dudes can run routes and catch the ball. Gallup was taught well at CSU, and Lenoir has been busting his butt the past year. They like him last year, but it didn't show up in the preseason games. Now, it is, and that's a testament to him. They both look like the anti-Dez in that regard.

4. There's going to be a tough decision on the running backs. Scarbrough looked pretty good, but Jackson looked better to my eye. I hope we don't make the mistake of cutting him loose again. Rod Smith looks quicker than last year, and he's a terrific all-around backup.

5. Tavon Austin will add another dimension to the offense. He looks like what they wanted Lucky and Switzer to be, times ten. You can also see that bounce; he's excited to be here. He will be much closer to the West Virginia dude than I thought he'd be. A new scene is what he needed.

6. Here's my favorite thing. The corners are up on the line tighter, and the safeties are more free flowing. It just gets my Earl Thomas antenna up higher because what a crowning jewel he could be for this secondary. Outside of a seeming fall-off from Jourdan Lewis, everybody looks good back there. This Kris Richard dude is the real deal.

7. Here's my second favorite thing. Dorance Armstrong was disruptive, and Taco Charlton showed some quickness and flash, too. Then, throw in Antuan Woods, who looks to be a real find in a needed spot. This will be a good group, led by Demarcus Lawrence, who can get consistent pressure, which will help that young secondary even further.

8. Our secondary coach has a glorious tan. Poster boy stuff.

9. Dak showed his gamer-ness yet again. For all his issues, he commands the offense well when the lights come on. He looks the part. That's just as important as developing his skills, and impossible to teach.

10. The best two players on the team, with apologies to Tyron Smith, didn't play, and it looked good. Depth looks more evident now outside of the tight ends. This thing isn't hanging by a thread in that regard.

Sure, there were negatives - Chaz Green, Lewis' play, Mike White - but those were just typical preseason stuff mostly from guys that aren't critical. But overall, it was a nice debut that showed promise in needed areas.

Honestly, couldn't find one point to disagree with. Well put.

One thing I guess, nitpicking. Anthony Brown didn't look to great either, but oh well!

This Anthony Brown vs Jourdan Lewis thing bears watching. Brown is having the better camp, but Lewis came into camp with the pedigree.

I also think Charles Tapper has to be wondering why he was in the game in the fourth quarter. His spot is tenuous at best, especially if Randy Gregory shows.

I'd say he's safer than Kony Ealy at best. Can't ever have enough guys that can get to the QB.

I'm encouraged by the two most glaring things I felt going into the offseason were speed on offense and LB's. It appears both were addressed very well!

Cut down at WR is gonna be tough
Lenoir is fighting very hard to push someone out of here

No way I keep him over Beasley, Austin, Williams, Gallup or Hurns. I like Brown's measurables more too so Lenoir is probably gone if it's my call.

Is it? Wilson, Brown and Thompson are all hurt and Lenoir is shining.

Beasley - Hurns - TW - Tavon - Gallup - Lenoir

That's really easy to me, at this point.

No more punt returns for Lenoir, I'm having flashbacks of Dez Bryant.

I wonder if Woods will be like Terrell McClain for us.

McClain spent his first four years in the league with three teams and totaled 29 tackles. He came here and was a good fit for the 1-tech spot despite injuries not letting him have the success he could have had.

Woods, in comparison, only played in one game, registering three tackles with Tennessee last year, but his fit may be much better here.

I missed the first Q offense. How many times did we line up with a FB?

Did Jamize O play?

Agree with everything totally except this dig on Switzer. They never let him into the game to run routes. Bc he is an excellent route runner and pass catcher. Austin looked good last night in the preseason, but Linehan still has to get him involved when its a real game plan. I have seen the ugly from Tavon Austin on PR. I am not sure who Dallas plans on returning punts. Did anyone notice last night who was PR? I forgot to pay attention.

Welcome back erod of years gone by. Great post.

Scarbrough is a mixed bag. I thought he looked great as a receiver and really good if he got past the line; however, as an inside runner he didn't look that good.

D.Jackson flashed. Not a lot of wiggle, but he's obviously very fast for a RB with good size.

Scarborough won't be breaking any 30-40 yard runs imho, he looks a bit slow.

Good job of getting the td though, had to find a spot to get through....

I like what I saw I think a he will be a good complimentary back after a year of NFL weight training. You could see he still thought he was in CFB and that his power is not what it was in college.

Lenoir made the team before last night. They absolutely love him.

I think they keep Brown, too, because he's growing into a tight end/H-back. He's got Henry Melton-itis. Melton played tailback in college; defensive tackle in the pros. Brown is an exceptional blocker, and he has good hands.

I think they keep SEVEN receivers: Hurns, Beasley, Gallup, Lenior, Williams, Brown, Austin.

That means they might keep only two pure running backs since Austin will play there, too.

1 - Once the D gets settled in they will be good. Tipped balls, DB playing up, getting pressure on qb. I saw some of the same stuff that could be preseason or third stringers playing. Us getting stupid penalties on 3rd downs and not getting off the field. Middle of the field open a few times. And Marinelli scheme that don’t seem to get pressure on 3rd downs. 1st and second they are all over the qb.

2 - Jaylon looks light years faster, smoother and smarter than last season.

3 - Gallop looked like a pro last night. Lenoir I think makes the team. Was that him with the toe drag TD?

4 - Rod makes the team. Staff likes Jackson. BO looks pretty good for a rook. Keep all 3. Lol. Oh wait I forgot about Elliot.

5 - Austin looks so happy to be here and is looking to make the rams sorry for letting him go. Wonder how much he will want to stay. I think Beez contract up next year. Would be nice to keep both.

6 - Corners look like they are loving playing up close. Did a good job. Brown has some issues. I still don’t think ET is coming here. Richards is the next DC.

7 - Taco made a big leap. Chasing and closing on qb all night. D-Law will repeat last year. We may be ok at DT. I just want more pressure on 3rd down. It has to be a scheme thing.

8 - Yes he is bronze.

9 - Dak is gonna be fine. I just hope they actually put in wrinkles and actually changed things in the Offense and didn’t just say that. Playcalling looked the same style to me last night. But it’s a 1st preseason game and it’s vanilla. Just want to see a shake up in regular season.

10 - Add in the 2 missing players and it’s money.

This young team is going to grow together early in the season and do good things.
