Where do you think Jonathan Mingo slots in on the Cowboys roster?

Less than a year after being acquired via trade from the Carolina Panthers, Jonathan Mingo could already find himself fighting for a job with the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. Despite the Cowboys decision to invest a 2024 fourth-round draft pick to acquire Mingo’s services, nothing is guaranteed for the 24-year-old receiver heading into his third season in the NFL.

The Cowboys were betting they could help further develop Mingo’s talent that made him a second-round pick ( 39th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. Sadly, the small sample size we witnessed from him last season was a far cry from a ringing endorsement. In eight total games with one start in Dallas last year, Mingo only caught five of 16 passes for 46 receiving yards. That was with Dak Prescott sidelined with a season-ending hamstring injury, however, even with a backup QB his production left much to be desired.

If Mingo’s lack of production wasn’t enough, the trade to acquire George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers further complicated things. At best, that lands him fifth on the depth chart right now with a slim chance to climb in the higher due to the players ahead of him. There’s no way Mingo will unseat either CeeDee Lamb or George Pickens at the top of the depth chart, and it’s also highly unlikely he’s capable of doing that with either Jalen Tolbert or KaVontae Turpin either. That firmly puts him on the bubble competing for a roster spot.

With his physical makeup and skill set there’s hope he can still develop into a starting-caliber receiver in the NFL. He’ll have the rest of the offseason to prove himself and will need a good showing to earn the trust of his teammates and coaching staff. And, there’s not another WR with his size (6’2”, 220) and speed (4.46) on Dallas’ roster.
That plus a rookie contract (2 years left) plus giving up a 4th just 7 months ago puts him on the 53.

I can't believe we just went over all this 2 weeks ago and now this article about him is written to we have to go over it all again!

I'm just waiting on the next head scratcher.

I want to believe Pickens will be a good un but I'm so fatigued right now, I'm fearing the worst. (That's on me.....note to self- be a better fan)

what are you fearing exactly about him?

It was a dumb trade. Only homers on this site think otherwise.
Nobody thinks it’s a good trade here.

But people have a sense of reality that after trading a 4th for a guy with 2 years left on his rookie deal is pretty much a lock on the 53. They aren’t cutting him in less than a year.

Trade sucked. But he’s a Cowboy in 2025

Our GM is stumbling around for attention without a clue, just like a turkey on Thanksgiving. The football gods must have cursed us!

No ,I believe he is guaranteed to spot this year will he be active maybe but he's not going to be high on the depth chart anyway. He will be allowed given a chance; he only was here 1/2 a season last year people, at least one full season to try to turn himself into maybe a Noah Brown type,a cedric Wilson, tried to do something to offer the team....

I mean I guess that's where people are missing the point the man was here for 1/2 a season and played with the backup quarterback it wasn't a good season he's going to get one full season or maybe two try to turn himself into a viable player he doesn't need to be a frontline starter to make it worth the trade like I said Noah Brown hell maybe he turns himself good enough to replace Tolbert when his contracts due in Tobert leaves for more money..

The expectations are low but anybody thinking he's not making the team this year is delusional.....

Teams all go through this,

by the way, I look at how you all assume or perceive the other teams don't do this they all do it at least we weren't the ones that burned a 2nd rounder on him the same way with Trey Lance trading 3 1st round picks for a guy, yes other teams make worse mistakes.

I mean how many first round picks have teams just stick in our division I remember the Giants and the Eagles struggling with first round wide receivers year after year wasting picks until they found one this is a much less risk than that we're not that invested it's not that big a loss you're making a mountain out of a molehill..

But you truly need to seek help I don't know what Pickens is going to do here but he's a proven commodity there is no doubt he's going to offer the very least a threat to help alleviate some pressure off of seedy lamb and he will make some plays I don't know how productive he's a proven commodity there is no? Except for how much will he produce like what teams will do now they gotta make decisions and it wasn't only his edition you have pickins blue you have a new staff by the way that hopefully they're more creative and can use all of our players better but Pickens is absolutely a great move....

In the end he's a low risk rental for one year and you'll get your draft picks back even if it's from the comp pics but you can always tag him and make somebody pay for him or trade for him in the end the Cowboys are not going to lose anything in this except getting valid number two wide receiver on this team and that's what we needed this is a year to year proposition that is what we needed we're going to have it at least for one year..

Think about the impact Amari Cooper had game one mid-season in a bad season we were at 3 and 5 made the trade and immediately it had an impact..

well this is even better because Pickens gets the offseason to get to know the offense and the team..

so I don't see where there's any downside to this at all other outside of something crazy like a bad injury happens but that's also something you have to think about if CD Lamb gets injured this guy's been a number one he's insurance as well as a number two so I just don't see where you have doubt here I don't care about your PTSD over moves they've made.

As a fan that's just a little bit too much to be worried about i'm not....just watch and find out

Not to mention, as it stands now, there are 4-5 players competing who are just better than Mingo....

I mean, maybe 6. I seriously hope he's not just handed the job.

I've noticed the Cowboys media often uses this site for ideas. Mainstream and independent.

That's just a skewed perspective my man look he will get a roster spot he's not taking someone's job it doesn't matter who you're developmental guys are after your 4th wide receiver we have that lineup locked in right now..

You are worried or who's going to come in every once in a while, and get some breadcrumbs, some scraps?

Everyone behind Lamb Pickens Tolbert and Turpin it doesn't matter.. They are all considered developmental players none of them has made it none of them has risen where they're considered to be a integral part of the team.

last year brooks got few mingo a few.. But that's about it if you look at those top four receivers then you go to tight ends then you go to the receivers out of the backfield there isn't very many targets left these guys again are considered developmental, he's not taking a spot from anyone......

If something strange happens and they usually keep 6 wide receivers in some receiver just is so great in training camp in preseason that it's obvious he's better that he's going to make the team over someone but it's probably not going to be mingo...

below the top 4

you have brooks, Mingo, Holden, Cambell , Kelley, Flournoy, Cropper etc etc Let camp play that out ...

By the way Mingo did get much of a chance last year he came in Prescott got hurt everything was not going well cooper Rush did not throw good balls to him the man was here for 1/2 a season and all of a sudden he's already doesn't even get a chance to get a full season in he will be on this roster and for good reason this whole entire year now when we start looking at him next off season and next year and he didn't do anything then maybe he gets cut from this team at some point but he deserves a chance to play a full season here especially with a new staff and hopefully his starting quarterback is here.

Again people around here look at weird stuff and at the weirdest perspective these guys are all developmental guys they're all just hopeful that they can get a spot some day from maybe Tolbert maybe Tolbert needs to get paid next year and they let him walk we're going to need one of these guys to then step up bigger but that'll be next year. Heck if we lose pickens because we can't resign them and we may lose Tolbert they'll probably right back in the top 3 rounds next year getting another wide receiver but in the meantime we get to see if one of these receivers may be two they step up but right now they're developing it doesn't matter which ones get on the team they're low hanging fruit at this point..

Cowboys WR depth is sneakily good this year going into camp after the addition of Pickens. If Holden or Flournoy outperform Mingo in camp I doubt for a second the Cowboys are keeping Mingo. The issue with Mingo is that he is running out of development time having just two years left on his rookie deal. If he isnt ready to contribute and younger guys are the Cowboys are going to invest their time into working with a guy like Holden. The roster math is not Mingos friend this year.
