Notice that we played the 4-3 almost the whole game?

VA, I talked about this the other day. Its so hard to predict which way we wil go in the draft. We have so much cap money that, we can really plug holes in FA. Not like we did this past off-season, but nibble here and there. That puts us in the BPA mode during the draft. Whose to say the BPA isn't a QB, a OL, a LB, a WR or anything?

We were playing our nickel defense instead of staying in the 3-4 when they went with 3 WR for a change.

I think I even saw OSU run some 3-4 last night. He would be a perfect fit, I just don't know if well draft a LB or sign one in FA.

I am working on an 06 FA list. I haven't gone over it with a fine toothed comb yet and I still have about 4 teams to finish, but having said that. The 06 FA class isn't looking real strong.

Granted, I don't have enough information to know which players can have their contracts voided and become free agents by that route, but the FA class isn't looking too great yet.

3-4 or 4-3......all I know is this.....it was the BEST DANG defense the COWBOYS have played since we won our last Super Bowl!

I don't really care what we call it........but, please keep playing this same defense!

You can call it what you want - but the fact of the matter is, we had 4 down lineman most of the game.

We also played some regular 4-3 in there too.

Morning Sarge.

And other than Bledsoe's great performance seeing the 4 down-linemen on defense so often was the second most uplifting thing for me yesterday.

Or some variation of a 4-man line...

I know I did!

Great move. We're far better as a 4-3 team.

Prob. to a page from the NE Patriots, they did that to Philly in the SB.

When there are 4 DL in a 3point stance on the LOS.....I would say 4/3

I may be wrong but where was the 3 LB? Am I correct in saying we were in the nickle most of the time?

Depends what's behind the 4 DL really.

Fact is, we have mediocre LB's and depth at DL, so we SHOULD see more 4 DL IMO. It's one of the overall strengths of this team (DL).

To me Ware is a DE, not a OLB. And any guy that goes into a 3pt stance is a DE.

I agree.

I didn't watch the 3-man vs. 4-man line thing....but I felt with Dat out that there was no way that you can say we are better off in a 3-4 without him.

It is questionable anyway to feel we are better off in a 3-4 over a 4-3 with everyone healthy.

If we played 4-3 with Aaron Glenn, Newman, and/or Henry at cornerback, we'd return to being a top 5 defense easily.

Its not his size that is in question, Freeney is not only the fastest DE in football but he has the moves to really dominate tackles. Ware hasnt shown that he can do that, all of his sacks have come off of speed rushes from the edge. Today was the first of his sacks when he didnt get to the QB virtually untouched.
He bull rushed thomas for his sack today, what are you talking about?

Not when that line was Ellis, Ferguson, Glover and Ware.

That was a 4-3 with Ware at RDE.

The only time we were in a true 3-4 they drove for their FG.
BP has addressed this oh about 10 times in press conferences and noted we play 3-4 principles even when we go to a 4 man line. I.E. Ware's job doesn't change because they dont want him to learn 2 positions.

Our best defense on paper is clearly the nickel and we really should use it in all but short yardage situations or against power running teams.

Having Ellis, Glover and Ware in the game is good no matter how we do it. Man that 3-some gets pressure. Add in Canty and the blitz package and we can do damage.

The difference in the 3-4 and 4-3 is not where you line up so much as what your job is. The 4-4 defense usually has 5 guys on the line for instance but its not a 5-2 because of responsibility.

BTW, we copied what NE did to the Eagles last year in the Super Bowl.

We have built a similar style team with the 3-4 scheme and deep DL.

His sack against the 49ers was also not a speed rush.

I noticed that Dallas often did not line up a nose tackle. There were many times where the defensive tackles were lined up shading the guards. That was a different look. Their typical 4-3 alignment the last several seasons had someone shading the center to force a double team and of course the 3-4 has the nose tackle directly on the center. Nice alignment wrinkle.

Well if we just draft, Brooks, Hawk, or Carpenter, or Howard, then or LB core will be okay, but I'm starting to jump on the Vince Young bandwagon. It would be the perfect time to grab him, and let him sit behind Bledsoe for a couple of years and.....oh don't get me started.

I'm all for it if it increases the formations Zimmer can employ effectively (<-- key word being effectively LOL). Right now I'm scared to death everytime scrubs like Singleton and Shanle are out there dictating the defense when it means someone like Glover or Fergy has to sit who I personally feel scares an offensive coordinator just a wee bit more. :) Regarding Vince Young, watch out for the Texas hype machine. This is the same Vince Young, the Big 12 just isn't as strong as it used to be. I'm an Ag so I'm a homer, but I think Reggie McNeal has every single physical tool that Young has and probably a stronger arm too. I'm for legit 1st round QBs or bust. So sick of projects. I'd be willing to give up the farm for Leinart. All his question marks are the same crap I heard with Carson Palmer and Peyton Manning.

I also wanted to add that I think regardless of what formation Parcells decides to use against an opponent, it looks like he is starting to abandon this "keep 'em fresh" philosophy and as the season goes on, we're going to see less of guys like Kenyon Coleman regardless of the formation, and he's going to rely on more of his elite linemen. As well it should be. Keep the monsters in, take the scrubs out.
