I think Jimmy did an onside kick to change the momentum of the game.

That was the 'big gorilla' game. Afterwards Jimmy gave the speech to the team where he said you fight a big gorilla you don't hit him lightly.

Looking at the stats...Emmitt had 34 carries for 132 yards that day. Troy went down in the first half of that game...he didn't return until our playoff game vs. the Detroit Lions in January. Beuerlein took over the game and the rest of the season. There was actually a controversy as to whether Beuerlein should keep the starting job. Go figure.

I guess 34 for 132 isnt earth shattering. But at the time, from where the cowboys were coming from in regard to their last 3-4 years.....it was "going off" to me !!! And I do remember that controversy. Beuerlein played well in a lot of those games, early on......

Jimmy was awesome. One of my favs He could spot talent. He could scheme the xs and os. but more then any of that. Jimmy was a HEAD Football coach....one of the best imho.

Remember the game as if it was yesterday, Irvin owned Green and Johnson coached to win and pulled out all the stops. Onside kick, and Hail Mary to Harper. Still have it somewhere around here on VHS.

I have a ton of those VHS tapes too. And no player.

I have that game on dvd. The bigger thing that happened in that game, IMO, was that Michael Irvin absolutely owned Darrell Green. Prior to that game teams had been staying away from DG, and rightly so. But Troy and Irvin went right at him all game long. Also, we went for it on 4th down two or three times, including I believe a 4th and 9. We also kicked an onside kick after a second quarter TD, recovered it and then followed it with a bomb to Alvin Harper. Troy got knocked out of the game, but we had Beuerlein and he was able to hold on for the win. Even he went to Michael when Darrell was covering him.

yeah I have that game too, it was a great game and a turning point.
That was when other teams had to realize dallas may be a good team.
Jimmy gambled a lot and most of it payed off, I think one 4th down try failed , but all the other stuff worked.

That is what you have to do to beat a team that is better than you. be bold, which is why JG tends to fail in big games.

I'll never forget this. I agree with what Jerry had to say about it. I've always thought so.

  • On November 24, 1991, the 6–5 Cowboys handed the then unbeaten 11–0 Commanders their first defeat and their only defeat at home that season, 24–21. Despite the loss the Commanders would finish 14–2 and go on to win the Super Bowl XXVI. The Cowboys, motivated by the victory, would reel off a 6-game win streak, finishing 11–5; Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would later tell The Washington Post that he believed this victory was a key turning point in the Cowboys' transformation into the dominant team they would become for much of the decade.[13]

This is a very important anniversary in Dallas Cowboys history. :starspin:

I was two days away from returning from a 6-month deployment from the Persian Gulf when this game took place. I had my folks tape the game for me and mailed it to me when I arrived at Long Beach, CA two days later. I would watch the Thanksgiving game vs Pittsburgh a few days later live from the ship.

yeah I had some too, most I transfered to dvd's.
you cant buy a vcr , unless ebay has some, but I think walmart still sells a vhs "player"

I bought one last year!!! I found one at Walmart ...I was very desperate to transfer my Super Bowl VHS tapes to DVD. My husband thought I was crazy to buy a VCR just for that. But as I mentioned elsewhere, he's a Saints fan...he couldn't possibly understand.

I have it on VHS but the game is also on you tube. You could see the beginning of a dynasty. Was Norv first year and you could see the difference in the offense. Harper, Erik Williams, Maryland, Dixon Edwards were rookies and Irvin had his breakout year. Who would have know then that they were only a year away.

I guess I could get them transferred to DVD or even to digital if I took the time. Pain in the butt, but it could be done.
