We will need a new HC soon, whether this season or right after the last game.

(I can only offer Stoops. But OK won't let him go and he already makes $3.5 mil and that is probably without endorsements. Pipe dream for us Stoops fans.)

Who are the top 5 NFL coaches/assistants or ex coaches who could be available to us immediately after the last regular season game?

Who are the top 5 college coaches you think could coach in the NFL and be available to us?

Garrett is the next head coach in Dallas.

May as well get used to it.

That is pretty obvious. So obvious I didn't mention it.

But I would like some other names to consider . . . .

I am sure my fellow Zoners could toss in some interesting names.

There is a reason why college coaches are in college....and why several of the college coaches left the NFL to go back to college.......cause the games are totally different.

Pete Carroll, Charlies Weis, Dave Wannstadt, Nick Saban, Bobby Ross, Bobby Petrino, June Jones, Butch Davis, etc......all were in the NFL and are now in college and are probably all much happier.

Tom Landry from the 1970s or the one who didn't win a playoff game after 1982?

The one who had success.

If a magic fairy could come swooping in to give me any coach I want, it'd be Jeff Fisher.

However, if I had to live in reality, I'd probably choose Bill Cowher. I really don't want a coach learning on the job. I don't want Jason Garrett as head coach right now. In a few years, he'll probably be ready for that, but really, I just can't see promoting a guy from this staff when all we've seen this year is incompetence from every area of this coaching staff.

If things continue to go the way they have been, I think Jerry will meet with Bill Cowher and offer the guy anything he wants.

Hopefully.

I think this team needs someone with Cowher's 'fire' and experience.

And I could see several reasons for him to be interested in this job if he is in fact looking to get back into coaching.

But Jones needs some hope going into the new stadium and a big name like Cowher would provide that.

And I haven't seen where Garrett has done anything to warrant a promotion to head coach.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. If the team crashes and burns as it appears it's going to, Jerry will have to make a "wow" type move to generate interest to fill that new stadium every week, and so a bigger name like Cowher becomes more of a possibility.

If the team sorta rights itself and makes the playoffs, it might be enough evidence for Jones to make Garrett the HC. Especially if its because of the offense that they make the playoffs. (and IMO it would be)

I am not a big Cowher proponent, but I do agree we probably need an intense, in your face kinda coach here that can motivate and get the most out of players. We havent had that since Jimmy. My worry with Cowher is that he's already done everything he can do, he's been out of it for two years. If he comes back and coaches, is it because he wants to win big or just because he wants a 7-8 million a yr payday? IMO thats the reason Parcells did it, just for the money. He didnt have the same drive he had with the Giants or even the Patriots. I dont want another Parcells coaching situation because nothing will change.

I think Cowher still has more fire at this point than Parcells did by the time that he got here.

I think that part of Cowher's motivation would certainly be money.

But part of it would be coaching a team like the Cowboys.

A new stadium. An owner that will get him whatever he wants.

And a team that does have talent but has underachieved to this point.

If Cowher has faith in his own abilities, he has to feel like he can get more out of them than Phillips has.

The big questions for me are:

1) Is Cowher looking to get back into coaching at this point?

2) Would he be willing to relocate to Dallas to do it?

I don't think JJ will go after a college coach. I think he's wary of the transition.

Here are a few names.

1. Cower - He's a proven winner in the PLAYOFFS and he's a great motivator. Plus, he's won with the 3-4 Defense. Now, does Cower definitely want to get back into coaching? I don't know.

2. Mike Holgrem (sp?) - Isn't he through this season at Seattle? I know he's having a very bad year. But look at his career. He's won with the Packers and he's won with Seattle. I DO know that guys like JJ and BP respect his teams and his coaching skills. What was Seattle before Holgrem took over? They never made it to the Super Bowl, that's for sure.

3. Garrett - He's probably the favorite, IMO. But he's going to improve his game as well over the next weeks to get the gig. Now, we know that Garrett his relatively young, motivated, bright, has been to Super Bowls as a player, etc., etc.

But can he win as a HEAD coach?

We already know guys like Cower can. Do you take the known or the unknown?

4. Spagnolo (sp?) - The DC from the Giants. Again, he's definitely an up and comer. JJ will probably have to return to the 4-3 base. Not sure IF JJ wants to do that, or not. But again, as a DC, he's a winner. Jury still out how that translates to a HC job.

Those are some guys off the top of my head.

First I'll say that Garrett is pretty much the given that he's going to be the next coach. At this point, and I'm keeping an open mind to this depending on how he handles himself as OC the rest of the way this year, I'm not sure that I like that option much anymore.

Now if I could have any available coach when it gets to that I've made it pretty clear that I'm a huge Cowher fan and that would be absolutely awesome, IMO. I still don't believe, however, that a guy like Cowher (Won a Superbowl and could land pretty much any opening that comes up that he wants) is going to come here and deal with the Jerry Jones that everyone believes he is.

If Jerry really is one of those guys who tells coaches who to play, when to play them, how to play them, what to do with the play calling, then I don't see a guy like Bill (Though I still can't for the life of me understand how any self respecting coach would either) ever being willing to take this job.

Outside of Bill, in terms of who might be available, Mike Holmgren could be a possibility, if he were interested in just getting right back into coaching and simply wanted a change of scenery from Seattle. He's got a good track record, as far as winning, getting to 3 Superbowls and has a W in one. I wouldn't be upset if he were the next coach, but something tells me he intends to take at least one year off and even if he didn't that San Fran job might be a lot more attractive to him since he and his wife are building a home in that area anyway.

Spags for the Giants would be an interesting possibility because he's a defensive guy, which this team badly needs if Wade isn't going to get the job done, but he'd be a rookie at it and that might be a draw back to the HC position. Still if Garrett is likely then Spags would warrant some consideration because you're effectively killing two birds with one stone. Getting a HC that could help this defense, the way Wade was supposed to, and taking an important coaching piece away from the rival GMen.

Around the rest of the NFL there isn't much else out there that I really care for, at least that I know would be available, as of right now.

On the college ranks...probably no one, honestly. I'm very leary, anymore, of college coaches coming to the NFL because of just how many fail, and fail spectacularly, anymore. I'm not a fan of the idea of bringing in Stoops, I've been hearing that where I live for a few years now. Everytime there is the rumors, or whispers, of Dallas being close to possibly needing a new HC the talk around here will turn to, "Will Jerry try and get Stoops." No thanks, I'll pass.

Wow, you posted like seconds before me but mentioned the top 3 guys I did (not including Garrett since I didn't actually include him in my run down, being that I figure the job is probably already his anyway).
