I thought on draft day that most people thought Justin Pugh was a 1/2 to 1 rd reach.
That's revisionist history saying everyone loved them picking him in the middle of the first round.

Of course, many thought Freddy was a reach late in the 21st too. But at least Dallas traded down from mid 1st round to get him (and got Williams also) vs taking him right there...like NY did w/ Pugh.
They did need line help badly, so you can understand why they may have not wanted to risk it.

The trade was a smart move by Dallas from the standpoint of wanting an offensive linemen. Since the Cowboys had Pugh and Frederick pretty much even on their board, they knew that there was a good chance they would get one of them.

As is, New York overpaid for Pugh while Dallas got value according to their board in selecting Frederick, Escobar and Williams, all rated in the 20s by the Cowboys.

I remember everyone saying Pugh was a reach as well. I remember hearing the reason why we took Fredericks was because linemen were being drafted too early and while Frederick's had a 3rd round grade on him he would've been taken earlier.

He didn't have a third-round grade by Dallas. He was rated No. 22 by the Cowboys, but a second-round value because they only rated 18 players (I believe) as first-round picks.

Who the Cowboys? I'm speaking on the rest of the league and "experts". Everywhere you looked, Fredericks was considered a 3rd round pick. Some even 4th round pick. Same goes with Hitchens who other people had lower grades on him. I'm of the belief if you have a guy you want you should draft him wherever. Especially if you think he'll be a player. I don't care if he's projected to go in the 7th. If you think he's a player that can contribute now? Why wait for another team to grab him?

The defense no longer has a weak link. Mo was the weak link which earlier in the year tried to take advantage of. With Scandrick in there and his ability to play press and zone, its not become a strength. Wilcox is quite possibly the weak link now. But he has stepped up his game and made some pretty big plays sniffing out screens, etc. His going to play a factor down the line when we play Phili and other teams that like to throw short in order to try and beat the pressure our dline puts out.

It seems that we've got several younger players playing well currently, while improving each week, like Leary, Martin, Williams, Hitchens, Crawford and Wilcox.

Im actually shocked. Its like a Jekyll and Hyde transformation. Whats scary is that they are getting better every week. Compare that with their first game and its like night and day. I know Im being Capt. Obvious here.

Their worst performance on this defense was the Rams game. That had mostly to do with them targeting Mo and having Durant and Ro out on injuries. When they get more people back from injuries they are going to have the same transformation on defense like whats happening on the offense.

But you're absolutely right. I'm still scratching my head wondering exactly how they're doing it.

I sure hope so! But, then again, things look to be working well now. I hope adding more talent doesn't screw it up!

Not sure about the rest of the league, but the "experts" certainly had him rated late second, third and even fourth round. Since not all teams' value boards are out there, I wouldn't assume that some of them, or maybe even most of them, had Frederick rated lower than where he was taken.

That's why it's so hard for me to take seriously those who complain about where a player is picked, as if they know what teams/scouts think that player's value is. Now, I do think it is interesting to read draft gurus' takes on the players, but I don't give much weight to the draft values they give them because they crow when they get one right but don't peep about the many they get wrong.

In 2013 the NY Giants spent the 19th overall pick on Syracuse (G) Justin Pugh. The media loved NY Giants were never called for a reach....it was just accepted as a good pick. The Cowboys passed on Pugh, traded out and picked up T. Frederick and T. Williams. The Dallas Cowboys were crucified in the media for reaching on Travis Frederick
Just from a quick Google search of 2013 draft grades:
"I don't like this pick by the Giants. I see him more as a guard, and they need a tackle. Jerry Reese is damn good, but this is strange."
"Pugh is a bit of a reach going in the top 20."
"Much was made about how the New York Giants "reached" for Justin Pugh over other players in the 2013 NFL Draft."
"They have a good history of drafting offensive and defensive lineman, but Syracuse tackle/guard Justin Pugh at No. 19 feels like a reach."

Yea this was what people were saying back then. I'm not sure where the opportunity got everyone loved that pick of Pugh.
