Adams...Kosier...Gurode...Davis...Columbo

If you stop and look at the starting 5 you have to ask yourself a couple of questions.

1. In what order would he have to replace each guy?

2. Who among those 5 has the most capable replacements?

This is just my opinion, but the answer to question 1 would be Adams & Kosier are about equal. Columbo would be next. Followed by Gurode and lastly Davis.

Again just my opinion, but the only backup we have that I do currently trust is Free and he is slated to be our LT. Will it be in 2010? I think there are some signs pointing to that possibly being the case. I would be fine with it. As much as I like Flo, he is at the end of his career.

I think the team is a lot higher on Procter than any of us are, but they are not high enough on him to want him to be a starter. I think this is why the team's #1 guy is probably Iupati. If you have Flo and Kosier about equal on need to replace but have Free already in place to replace Flo then OG makes more sense than OT.

Make no mistake about it though, we need to improve OL depth. That brings me to Travis Bright and Robert Brewster. Last year I heard that the team was really impressed with Free and I shared the info. I am hearing some of the same reports about Bright. Not the same glowing reports, but confident he has the tools to contribute.

Brewster is being considered as our future RT. That takes care of the 3rd name on the first list. I think we need 9 guys on OL for the 53 man roster who are versatile and a little bit nasty. Free definitely fits that description. His being 30 to 40 yards downfield delivering a block was the best hustle by an OL I have seen since Larry Allen ran down a defender and forever made Dan Dierdorf drool about how athletic that was.

I can't see us starting 2 new faces on OL in 2010. Not when we were so close to being an elite team contending. It is not impossible, but it is improbable.

I think it is far more likely we'd see them starting 4 of the same faces and 1 new one. Not sure at this time if Kosier or Flo are the odd man out. I would love to keep Kosier as the top OG backup over Holland and even over Bright if they really do have enough faith in him to promote him from the PS.

If Flo is not starting I would prefer he not be on the team. If he is let go and Free given the job I think that does make OT an earlier need than we would have if he does stay and starts.

Would we start Free, still draft Iupati and then grab an OT ins the 3rd or 4th round to groom as Free's backup? Yeah, I think we would. In fact, I think we probably will.

To me you replace Flo because Kosier is a quality guard that we won't have to break the bank on to resign.

I also hate to use a 1st rounder on a guard but wouldn't be to upset since our 1st rounder is so late.

I think the whole Viking game/ Flo injury thing left a really bad taste in Jerrys mouth. Besides declining skills I wonder if Jerry questions how hard Flo tried to get back into the biggest game the team had been in over 13 years. If Free shows he can handle it, Flo is out of there.

Interesting thought. First time I have heard it put out there.

I'll put my 2 cents in . . . .

It also seems to me that Free is being projected as the future at LT and Brewster at RT.

However, I may be in the minority on this, but while I would aim for Iupati at 27, even if I could draft an OT in Rounds 2-4, I wouldn't cut ties with Flo right away or maybe even this season (even though he has a roster bonus due in June, I believe).

If we didn't have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl, and I could draft a LT to spell Free, I probably would go younger sooner.

But let's say that by the beginning of the season, or sometime during the season, that Free beats out Flo - I would prefer to hold on to Flo for this season (even though it's expensive). That's not to say we shouldn't draft another OT. I think we should this year. But (hopefully) that draft pick beats out McQuistan and takes his roster spot this year.

Next year, the 2010 OT draft pick (from this upcoming draft) would be ready to better contribute in case Free got injured, and I would release Flo end of the 2010 season (after our Super Bowl win, of course).

When your entire starting line is 30+, you better hope that a youth movement is in place.

Besides Free at the tackle spot (RT as LT is still sketchy), you can't look at our roster and say we have troops in waiting.

It's because of this that I wouldn't bat an eye if we took nothing but OL the first three rounds.

I still wouldnt mess around w/ OT. We think we got something in Free, we are pretty sure about that. But between the other three tackles do you have any confidence in them?

Id love to have too many tackles

well you use this year to groom Iupati - the try an resign Kosier in 2011

and keep Flo this year even if Free beats him out - whats it going to do hurt Flos feelings he knows it a business

an Draft a swing OT in late rounds this year there are a couple guys I would not mind in here - give him a couple of years to take over Columbos spot - or even Frees spot if he can't handle it LT

Jason Fox 6-6
Tony Washington 6-7
Tyler Eastman 6-6
Derek Hardman 6-6
J'Marcus Webb 6-7
OT Nic Richmond 6-7

I have the same feeling.

Like you said, biggest game in years, in a battle against two outstanding DEs, Colombo is struggling, Free is still green, and Flozell's fat *** is sitting on the bench with some sort of an injury.

Jerry seemed upset with Barber the year before for being out with an injury. Flozell's exit at Minnesota couldn't have set well with Jerry.

I haven't put it out there in terms of Jerry but I have said multiple times that Flo called it a day.

If I were Jerry, that would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I agree wholeheartedly with ya.

The only thing Jerry should do is get Houck's opinion after the game then start making future plans.

I agree with the first two Hos, but then I'd probably replace Gurode 3rd. The guy either has no heart or no football IQ whatsoever.

Solid argument for guard, just a few questions.
1) What was the official report on Flo's calf and is he still limping around?
2) Has Kosier hinted at retirement and have their been any talks to extend his contract?

Saffold is on my radar if we miss Iupati, he can play both guard and tackle...

I am more than happy with Free so I don't think we need to reach for a LT at the bottom of the first round.

I really don't know about Brewster and I think coaches may like his potential but he is a large question mark. At the very least, someone should be drafted to groom as a new swing tackle or young backup at RT for when Colombo is gone. If there is good value (and this is usually not the case) I wouldn't object to a first round OT if he is thought to be a much better prospect than Brewster.

I don't like any of the young guard/centers. I really have no issue with drafting one at the bottom of the first if that is where the value lies. Too often last year the pocket was collapsing up the middle on Romo. I don't think Kosier has enough strength to hold off the monster DTs anymore. I also worry about Davis and his whiffs in pass protection and inability to hold the LOS in short yardage - he is overrated beyond belief with his 3 straight Pro Bowl appearances.

More important than anything else, I want the new OL to be able to run and make blocks in space. This better suits our current offensive personnel than the roadgraders of the mid-90s teams.

That was well written, and I can see that happening for sure. You are right. One change on the offensive line is probably all we will get.

As far as Proctor goes, I just don't get why they like watching him not come out of his stance while the entire Giants team runs after Romo or why they like watching people like Shawn Rodgers run over and around him and plant Romo.

From what I've watched, Proctor can't get you through 3 games at center without losing. When he's at guard, you have problems, and Romo takes too many hits due to his lack of ability. They run over him and around him.

I wish a guy like Pouncy would come to Dallas. If something happens to Gurode, this team is going no where with a poor mans Clay Shriver.

I'm starting to think Adams is gone and Free is going to start at LT, and that wouldn't be a bad thing, imo. Adams has been a real good one, but the Cowboys need to get younger at offensive tackle, now.

cut flo after this year, name Free the starter after the move.

Draft a guy that can play all the spots in a pinch, kid like the beagle kid or whatever his name is from utah. A guy who was moved around the line in college and had success. If brewster can play then the new kid gets to stick around until kosier needs to go(two years) and hopefully by then we will have a servicable center to replace gurode (3 years) and then bigg with be the one fans are crying about being too old and too slow.
