Wonder if Lionel Vital played a part in this?

Hope he's good. But remember when we got all hyped up about "stealing" Caesar Rayford from Indianapolis?

Yep. This is what happens with pass rushers. They flash enough to make you think you might have found something, and then, poof, it's gone as quick as it came about. This is another signing like Irving or Jack Crawford. That's the standard he needs to meet. If he does, then it helps our rotation and at least gives us NFL caliber snaps. We do need to get Jack Crawford done too, though.

From there, we can work on actually upgrading the DL with players who have unique talent. If we get Crawford done and add two more DLs someplace in the draft (hopefully at least one of them a high pick), that gives us enough decent young players to rotate 10-11 and hopefully get some consistent snaps up front.

It's weird to me that the Cowboys have been so good about not over paying in this FA period, but this one seems like an over pay to me. Not that we broke the bank or anything, but based on his production.

And by production, you mean his two sacks, completely disregarding anything he did on any other play. You know, football is more than just sacks.

Wouldn't mind Crawford coming back to compete for a spot. It's more likely that we'll have to carry five ends because of Gregory's suspension (although he won't count for the first four weeks). Right now, we've got Lawrence, Mayowa and Gregory ... unless anyone is counting on Russell or Mike McAdoo.

Right now, Russell is on the depth chart as a backup for defensive end.

Caesar's tape was all preseason, that is all they had on him. At least with Mayowa they had regular season tape.

It almost sounds like you're telling me what I think/mean rather than asking. I simply think/mean we over paid based on his production thus far. Sacks are indeed merely one stat and I did not mean only his two sacks, as impressive as these 2 sacks might be to you. Taking your logic into play, you must mean his 23 total career tackles in 3 years? Geez, don't act like this guy is some proven veteran. We paid for the hope that he can become one and I hope he does. Oakland didn't think he was worth it at least.

I think it's a little different. Rayford had done nothing in the regular season. Mayowa played in two games his first year and contributed two tackles. His next year, he increased his appearances to 16 games with 1 start and contributed 13 tackles, a sack and a pass defensed. Last year, his starts went up (two), while his total games went down (12) and he contributed 16 tackles, a sack, a safety and a forced fumble.

This is a player who has shown he can contribute. His floor seems to be that he can come in as a rotational guy, create some pressure and make a few plays. There doesn't seem to be a question about that. The question is how high is his ceiling?

I am, consider it guidance. You're welcome. You know it, I know it -- when you said "based on his production," you were thinking about the two sacks. I'm not saying I know anything about this player, but I've seen a lot of noise about his X number of sacks in Y number of years and just know that production can come in many different forms. Anyone who focuses on a sack total (or even a tackle total) without looking at tape of the guy is just being obtuse.

The upside on this guy is very good. So you have to spend a bit.

The guy seems like a bubble player for both the Seahawks and Raiders.
Just another guy to rotate in to the lineup. Nothing exciting.

If nothing else, he's a rotational speed guy to pair with Gregory, and very likely will fill in during first 4 games.

Now, I don't think we should rely on Mayowa to be anything more than Mincey's replacement, but as Mincey's replacement, I like the move.

Also the Dallas scouts did a good job in spotting project players with upside like Selvie and Jermy Parnell, Mayowa is clearly that type of player but with more upside because he was on NFL rosters but blocked by other players.

I'll give the Dallas scouts the benefit of the doubt and wait to see this kid in Training Camp.

Dallas has been pretty good at player personnel pickups lately. This is another get that hopefully will pan out so I am going to give McClay the benefit of the doubt on this one. They are paying him like they expect him to keep improving. Like a few have said so far, if the plan is to put him in the rotation - not expect him to be the focal point of attack, I'm good with this. Sign Jack Crawford back, Russell will be entering his 2nd year so he will improve. And now, comes the draft where I believe either a 2nd or 3rd round DE will be selected.
Lawrence, Gregory, Mayowa, Russell, Crawford and a draft pick. It's better than I thought we were gonna end up with.
And the biggest benefit of this rotation is that it doesn't pidgin-hole us into having to take Bosa at # 4.
From the start of FA where I believe they got caught with their pants down - see Claiborne DE Falcons. To now, has been a nice recovery. If we do in fact get all 3, Morris, Robinson and Mayowa, maybe the FO is not as inept as we were all screaming about recently.

Just like the city of New Orleans, nothing good ever comes out of Oakland, blokes.
