What are the realistic odds of us failing to reach a new contract with Spencer and us going with Crawford/draft pick at DE next year?

Hopefully none.

In a time where you have limited salary cap space, allocating $20M for a two year rental is just insane. At this point a longterm deal is the only way to go. Well, I guess there's still a prayer he gets traded but not holding my breath.

I think it's 75-25 they sign him to a new deal. If they don't sign him to an extension before July, I think it is almost a guarantee he will be gone. I don't think they can Tag him again and even if they could it would be for 13m+, which is way too much.

Honestly, I'm hoping he gets traded this year to a team that needs a 3-4 OLB and we get a 2nd or 3rd for him. Barring that, I hope we rent him for a year and he walks and then we get a compensatory pick for him.

I'm guessing 80/20 he stays and we extend him. I also think over the course of his contract that it will be a contract that we will wish we will eventually wish we had not done.

I think Spencer will get a longer term contract to replace the franchise tag.

very unlikely he gets to the draft unsigned... if he is still franchised come draft time and someone like Ziggy Ansah is around. we might seriously think about it.. but that is a lot of ifs.

I'm hoping so too, but I don't think that the Cowboys have that mindset.

I don't think they have that mindset either. Jerry overvalues Cowboy players to the point that trading with Dallas is just about impossible. If you read many off the posts on this board, you will see that the fans overvalue Cowboy players as well. This attitude has hurt the team time after time. This year there are two former first round picks that are walking away without any return for the team. Jenkins and Jones have drawn little free agent interest, despite reading that they should bring high draft picks in a trade. Jenkins should really be an eye opener. Posters were scared to death that Jerry was going to trade him. He really was a difference maker this year.(sarcasm)

How about if Werner was our first pick and we moved Spencer to the strong side linebacker spot, a spot I believe he could strive in......Imagine our front 7.

Not likely for several reasons...

First off you (generally speaking) aren't going to pay a 4-3 OLB that kinda coin ($5+ million per year). OLBer in a 3-4 is more valuable than an OLBer in a 4-3.

Secondly while it would allow Spencer to focus on his top strength (stop the run) it would make his second strength (pass rush) virtually non-existent and would force him to play more to his biggest weakness (pass coverage).

Not gonna happen.

would'nt be smart to pay spencer pass rusher money and move him away from rushing the passer.

Spencer has been a solid contributor his whole career. Yes, he doesn't match up with Ware, but he was never intended to. SOLB is usually the run containment LB, given teams like to run behind their blocking TEs. Add a pulling Guard to the mix, and Spencer did very well.

Um....I was going off the topic. If we were to let Spencer WALK after this season.

You dont franchise a guy back-to-back and then let him just walk out the door. Basically $20 million on a 2 yr rental?

That would be total cap mismanagement if they did this, thus I am 99.9% sure Spencer will sign a long term extension. Probably before the draft if I was putting money on it.

You can throw Romo in their as well, he will get done before the draft also.

There is no chance whatsoever that happens.

Spencer signed his tag and he is guaranteed that money regardless of whether or not the club releases him.

Looks like the OP was talking about drafting a DE, keeping Spencer on the tag and going without him next year.
