Looks like the OP was talking about drafting a DE, keeping Spencer on the tag and going without him next year.

That is the OP's intent. I don't think it would be a bad move if a quality DE prospect is available in the draft. Spencer's age and the salary cap hit are two major concerns. I would rather the team draft a DE and replace him unless he is willing to take less money due to the low DE contracts that have been signed this off season. Dallas made a bad move tagging Spencer considering the deals for DEs in free agency.

I still think the best move is to trade Spencer for a 2nd or 3rd rounder to a 3-4 team desperate for a pass rushing OLB.

If that fails the next best option is to do a 1-year deal on the franchise tag and then let him walk.

If that isn't chosen the next best option is to sign him to a deal for Kruger type money (even though Spencer is older and doesn't have a history of being a big-time playoff performer and is a lot older).

The worst choice would be to give Spencer a $10+ Million per year contract over 5 years. That would be an albatross of a contract for a player who is likely about to decline and is coming off of a career year. He is also far from an ideal LDE in a 4-3 formation - his proper position in this defense is manned by DeMarcus Ware who currently is signed to a gargantuan contract that may come back to bite us in the if his health doesn't hold up.

We keep paying old players lots of money and that is a fool's game in football. You have to move your older players for draft picks if you want to have sustained success in a hard salary cap league.

We have too many big contracts to non-elite players: Free, Rat, Austin and Carr. The only guys who really deserve big contracts are Romo, Witten and Ware. We have to keep cap space in the future to try and extend guys like Carter, Lee, Mo, Dez and Tyron. Those guys are our future. The guys listed before them are our past.

Send this post to Valley Ranch. They could use the good advice.

Exactly. I don't like the odds of this risk. It's simply way too much money.

if they reach a good deal that helps both sides, and if its long term, its worth it. While Spencer may not be the player i desired, he is a good contributor to the team even if stats dont prove it. You cant live and die by the stats.

Not my first choice, but thats neither here nor there, hes a cowboy and i support the team. So either way they go about and i agree with the posters who say it would be unwise to let him walk now. Sign him long term get it done and lets move on.

Odds of drafting one high this year to replace him? slim.. Odds we let him go and get one in the high rounds next year? pretty good if we don't get a long term deal done soon

It all depends on how the draft goes. Right now the DTs look really good this year for the first round pick and even well into the second round.

The DEs OTOH outside of Dion Jordan and Ansah all seem to be fairly limited in one way or another. The previous guys expected to go high like D. Moore, Jarvis Jones and Werner really disappointed at the combine with pretty lackluster performances so maybe one drops to us and is deemed worthy of the pick. The black horse in all of this might be Carradine from FSU in the second round. This is one area where I am glad we have guys like Kiffen and Marinelli here with their reputations about finding and building DL.

Much will depend on how the draft plays out. The top player on the board for us is likely to be one of the OGs, Vaccaro at Safety, Tavon Austin or a DL. I would personally go for Cooper as I think he can be an All-Pro type player for us at OG or C. If he is gone I'd probably say take the top DL or drop back to a willing trade partner as there is quite a bit of depth in the late first round at DL and there is lots of depth at Safety in the second and third rounds.
