Offensive Line Talk

for a rookie from a program that was not particularly good, Tyler Smith was overall a decent LT. But that was all
He had big issues with penalties -- folks on this board were calling him a bust.

What problems did Tyler Smith have? I remember the penalty issues but I thought he was excellent overall as a rookie.
Excellent overall?

He had 15 penalties called on him in his first year.

Were you even paying attention?

I expect the oline to be top 10 at least. There is some issues but I think it'll be ok. More worried about dak, the defense and the rbs

If so those people are idiots. He had I think 11 accepted (15 total) flags in close to 1300 snaps. Not ideal but Honestly not the end of the world either as he cost you 85 yards. He also made the all rookie team, was thrown into the LT position on short notice, and was a top 25 tackle per PFF. Overall really good, and you can work on the penalty issues.

If you really want to look at what penalty issues look like just look at guyton. I think he came in at 18 penalties in roughly 650 snaps. That’s an alarming number.

I think the LG-C are a very good combo

RG will be raw for a while.

RT….problems with pass protect.

LT … learning and hurt.

I think we are one more draft away from a very good line. RT

I’m disappointed in the OL coach. The lack of knee protection in OTAs is ridiculous. #Braces

Either he mentioned it and was denied, or he didn’t care.

Based on yesterday’s results the OL coach needs to go back to whatever D3 program he came from.

you are ignoring the possibility that many of those penalties were because he was playing LT vs LG. Having to work in a much wider area and having to deal with very fast pass rushers. his All Pro year at LG was comparatively penalty free

I see no real evidence that Tyler Smith can be anywhere near as good at LT as he is at LG.

Oh I dont doubt that one bit, and its exactly why he likely is playing inside at G and not T. No doubt he has been significantly better inside, but I wont pretend like he wasn't at least an average caliber Tackle his rookie year. Outside of the penalties he did a really nice job. The issue for him is he has more value as an all pro Guard than he does an average Tackle.

Right now anything can be run with this Dallas interior offensive line. That can be moved outside as to dominance.

We can't have an honest discussion about the OL if you say they didn't do anything. I don't like what they've done with Guyton but that is me.
I did not agree with drafting Guyton to play LT, and his poor play showed. He would have been a better plug n play at RT, but that is not what they chose. Hopefully he improves to at least be an average LT this year after he gets back from injury. And Shotty will have to call plays away from the left side often. The boys OL interior will matchup well with the eagles interior defense and that gives the boys a chance to push the ball to either of its star receivers.
How long before we abandon being under center to give Dak more time in shotgun?

Unfortunately they may not even play all the starters together till game 1. Well see, the interior will be all set.
