Twitter: Official: Anthony Spencer out for rest of season - 09/24/13

What a blown "minor surgery" back in July. Doctors fault, nobody else's.

Didn't they know he had knee problems a long time ago?

A little 6 week scope turned into micro fracture surgery huh? wow.

Oh well. I'd rather keep Selvie on the field anyways.

Not a huge surprise. This makes the hopeful return of Ratliff even more significant. And I still have doubts that will happen.

Jay Ratliff doesn't even appear in the team photo. I think they're done with him.

This makes Spencer, the team's best defensive player in 2012, much more signable for reasonable money in the offseason. This is his first injury, so I'd sign him if it's cheap.

Huh? LOL

The doctor didn't cause an injury. He tried to clean the area up with a scope so he could manage it during the season. Turns out, it needs more than that. No one's fault; blame football.

We gave a 29 year old coming off a very good year with no alternative in sight a one year deal. Seems like they played it right down the middle, rented him for another year, while not giving big money to a guy moving into his 30's.

No, you franchised him, making him one of the top five paid defensive ends in the NFL for one year.

Tough luck for all involved. On the bright side, maybe Spencer is a little more affordable.

Why is that in any way attractive? Get a younger DE instead.

Bring back Selvie, draft depth and rotate. I would hope we do not just sit pat thinking Crawford coming back is enough.

Does it mean anything for the cap if he goes on IR?

Feel bad for the guy. I feel like the light went on for him in 2011 and while I didn't advocate locking him up long term I hope he's able to bounce back from this. Microfracture surgery is one of those surgeries that the medical field hasn't really come up with an answer for yet.

I would definitely say they overpaid based on the market for defensive ends.

A lot of good ones signed for less than half of what the Spencer tag turned out to be.

And whenever you're looking at $10 million spent on no production, it's disappointing.

Hopefully, for the team's sake, the young guys like Selvie they've brought in will pan out for now and the future.

Yup, that's what they did, seems to me a prudent (at the time) middle of the road move. Player coming off of one big year, pay him one year to see if he could do it again, but don't invest in a long term contract for a player turning 30 in January.

LOL. I wasn't aware of that. But I've felt all along Ratliff was done here. I wish we truly knew the full story there.

Spencer is a better player though...

Sure about that?

Bennett played three positions last year for Tampa and had very similar numbers to spencer.

And all throughout his career spencer had ware a hall of famer on the other side.

Kept him one year to long.
