INDIANAPOLIS — The official 40-yard dash times have just been released for the defensive backs, and Taylor Mays was indeed the fastest, just not with the 4.24 unofficial time that was originally reported.
He was officially clocked with a 4.43-second 40-yard dash, placing him tied for ninth overall among all participants at the NFL Scouting Combine, behind wide receivers Jacoby Ford, Taylor Price, Emmanuel Sanders and Golden Tate, running backs Jahvid Best and C.J. Spiller, tight end Dorin Dickerson and specialist Trindon Holliday.
The official times are usually slower than the unofficial times recorded by NFL Network, which uses a person with a hand-held timer situated right at the end of the 40. The official times are done electronically and take a while to process and get released. The electronic timing is more exact than the human hand-held timing, so the times produced electronically are the official ones.
Chris Johnson has the fastest 40 time at the combine since 2000, when official times were first recorded.
Despite Mays’ slower time, he still made a statement by being the fastest defensive back at the combine, and he also posted an impressive 41-inch vertical jump, third only to Fresno State’s A.J. Jefferson and Tennessee’s Eric Berry.
Mays is Mike Mayock’s third-ranked safety, behind only Texas’ Earl Thomas and Berry.

Mucha do about nothing.................4.43 is not even remotely close to 4.24....but still very good.

Looks like Jacoby Ford takes the honors in 2010.

Taylor Mays is pretty quick for that big body. I'll say it again...wouldn't be surprised to see us pick him to take Carpenter's place...

I don't want Mays, but they showed all of the top players running a 40 at the same time, and the only one that finished ahead of Mays was Ford. He even beat Holliday, so that 4.43 wasn't very accurate. I still don't want him though.

I hear you. Just fyi, that digital, made for TV animation that trys to display different players running at the same time (which requires a lot of assumptions) is not as acccurate as the official digital and cross-checked time clock.

I'll take Thomas, btw....so we are probably on the same page regardng Mays.

I would take Thomas too, but after his Combine I doubt we have a shot at him.

I keep going over the teams and trying find a way he falls to us. I guess it could happen if those teams really looking for saftey help have another guy fall to them that they want at another position. Lot's of "ifs".

The official time of 4.43 is going to change again.

They showed the top guys all running in a layered effect and it's clear Mays ran a faster time than Trindon Holliday.

So that time isn't going to stick either.

It's a shame that he doesn't use that speed to actually make plays.

:D Guilty...sort of.
I recall that you are a fan too.

Really though, that unofficial time stuff drives me nuts. Google any player and you get all these wild times...then when they get officially timed electronically indoors--instead of by a very error prone (or even agenda-driven) hand(s) or are with wind aid--things always seem to turn out differently.

And, surprise, the times are always slower.

It is for a sure a pet peeve of mine and I overdo it at times. I ticked off AustinismySavior the other day when I called bull on the 4.1 hand-timed high school time still being used by Jacoby Ford (who I really like). He even started calling me names. Oh well.

All this 40 time mania drives me nuts, honestly. The whole combine underwear olympics phenomenon is starting to get overdone, really.

What really gets me are all these "reported" 40 times that guys supposedly run at their schools. They're done under who knows what conditions, and half the time I'm convinced they're totally fabricated.

But, I know... There's nothing else going on this time of year, so why not talk about it all. :)

Yeah. And it's wrong.

I could care less if it stays that time.

The visual evidence shows him running faster than Holliday.

I just wonder why they are 136 reports of times and then the official one comes out and it's always different.

I think this system if extremely flawed.

The "visual" evidence is what is flawed. That is a visualization, made-for -TV tool only. Each run is an independent event. If they were running against each other at the same time it would be accurate, but splicing that data together and trying to be accurate to 100ths of a second is not accurate at the level you're assuming. They could take that data and work with it a week or so and maybe give us a more accurate depiction, but even then it would be flawed.
It's cool to see, though.

The wide range of times you see are hand timed or electronically timed but not verified for accurate start time....the official times are electronic and verified. Far more accurate than even 5-6 years ago.

I can't speak for everyone.... I just find it interesting, that's all. And I suspect a lot of people on the forums here find it interesting to see the 40 times, and thus, like to talk about it.

Oh, I do to some degree as well... I just don't think it's that useful for evaluating players. But yeah, it's a good distraction right now when nothing else is happening.

And for the record, I don't really mean fans like us talking about it. I'm thinking more of the whole production from NFLN. I love that network and I know they have nothing else to show right now, but the 24/7 analysis of every detail is a little too much sometimes.

Then why does the NFL, who's every thought is based on making money, fund this huge event every year? I don't know the numbers but I'm sure the cost is ridiculous

I understand if it's not your particular cup of tea but the NFL, it's teams, and coaches must feel that it's a pretty useful tool for evaluating players.

Who's faster: Mays or Holliday?

I don't care if you list them both at 6.59.

But to have Holliday listed with a better time than Mays just make me second guess the entire process.

But do they care about 40 times or do they care about position drills to see how fast a DB can backpedal, turn, run and change directions?
