I used to ref. They're probably already working their craft full time, even if they have separate careers.

To get to the pro level, you must attend an insane number of officiating clinics, ref games, and get certifications. Most sports seasons go at least 6-9 mos as it is. The other 3 mos is when they're studying rules and training to actually be in shape to call the game.

What are they supposed to do that they don't do now?
Be right? :muttley:

But if they're the RIGHT calls, then I don't care about the amount of calls being made.

Too often, you hear "Let 'em play!" Then something egregious happens, then it's "Refs cheating. Why they didn't call that?"

Can't have it both ways.
Spoken like a true ref. Lol. You're right though. Tons of people here calling for consistency but will get inconsistent in a hurry when folks want to look at the whole picture that also includes the other side. The one I hear is "the game is soft nowadays" and then call for a crappy roughing the passer penalty like Dak was the beneficiary of last night when it's their side.

Again, last night there was some very questionable calls made and missed for both teams.

But overall, I thought the refs called a fair game.
I agree. The calls that were made were warranted. I’ve seen far worse officiating - the Thanksgiving game against the Raiders was attricious.

It's not true. Fans think more calls go against them purely from perception. Since a fan is rooting for one team, they are only going to see it from a fan's perspective.

Thinking the calls are against you is being said on every NFL fan board across the NFL. Nature of fanhood.
my "truth" comment was in reference to woody's girl saying you can't have it both ways.

Application of the ever-changing rules has generally gotten far too legalistic, replete with burden-of-proof and "reasonable man" issues. Officiating has become a mini-drama of its own within the game. Is it really necessary to conduct an inquest before a faceless panel of officials in New York a couple of times a quarter, while the nation is at the edge of their seats? Who is really officiating the games anyway?

I've hung up my stripes, so I'm more fan more often than not these days. lol

We can pick certain plays from last night to chew on, but the game itself was called tight on both sides. Players should've adjusted once they realized that they weren't letting much go.

They were equal on both sides. I am good with that. Cowboys made mistakes and they were called. They only call I didn't like was the late hit/helmet hit on their QB. He's dancing around in space and then all of a sudden slides? It's tough to pull back as a defender going at full speed. We protect the QB way too much.
Dak was hit in the head on a near sack and no flag was tossed

This isnt a rag on the refs for blown calls or anything like that. This is a thread to discuss how unwatchable these flag happy, camera time seeking officials are ruining this game.

The game last night should have been over probably an hour before it was, but due to flags the game went on forever. It seemed it was almost every other play. It was sickening. On both sides. This was apparent on Sunday as well.

For a league with the amount of money the NFL has to employ such inept, and attention starved officials is not ok. No one wants to watch a game where you have to check the field after every play to see if its coming back.

This needs to be fixed. I dont even know how they can go about it, but something needs to be done. This game is becoming unwatchable.
Yeah, I was thinking that one ref who’s obviously middle aged but he’s pretty jacked trying to look like a middle linebacker that has a super tight shirt around his biceps, obviously because of his age is at least on testosterone replacement, was definitely wanting his 15 minutes of fame. Lol the dude looks like a total ******.

I dont know. I think it has more to do with overall mediocre coaching, the quality of offensive line play declining league wide for years, and the mentality league wide both players and owners that results dont matter because no matter what i am going be cashing huge checks.
it is now a mediocre nfl, players coaches owners are all mediocre, and games and seasons are becoming boring to watch.

A missed call here or there is fine...refs call ALOT of penalties at times because we'd be fools to think Vegas has no influence on games

calls like the punt return was horse crap
calls like the vikings game last year where they reveiwed a play AFTER another play was run is bullcrap
calls like the saints rams no PI call is crap

all in all missing calls is human error its like management you dont fix EVERY issue all the time thats inpossible

but when Steve from accounting is evacuating his bowels on top of his coworkers desk and nothing is said then you lose credibility

the nfl wants all the penaltys, thats why they have the crazy rules !
last nite they commented on we still dont know what a catch is lol.
the refs do as they are told, so dont blame them blame the owners.

There is no point in having any rules if teams can break them as part of some "understood arrangement". The teams were clearly breaking the rules.

Is it frustrating to watch? Absolutely. Is it largely avoidable by playing smarter? Yep.

If anything, tougher penalties are needed to discourage coaches from trying to break every rule in the hopes they come out better off in the aggregate.

It's not about qualifying the refs, it's about streamlining the rulebook. Refs are simply confused at this point. For several years, no one even really knew what a catch was.

That’s why I said full time not part time where they are coming from other jobs but that would also improve the quality also.

There were some head scratching calls that happened every couple of minutes that made me want for the game to be over asap. The subjective nature of these calls and how everyone handles it differently makes the game less enjoyable. Atleast they called it on both sides.
