Officiating is ruining the game

Again, last night there was some very questionable calls made and missed for both teams.

But overall, I thought the refs called a fair game.
I didn't watch but saw the limited highlights - good to hear it was fair

I used to ref. They're probably already working their craft full time, even if they have separate careers.

To get to the pro level, you must attend an insane number of officiating clinics, ref games, and get certifications. Most sports seasons go at least 6-9 mos as it is. The other 3 mos is when they're studying rules and training to actually be in shape to call the game.

What are they supposed to do that they don't do now?
Honestly i do not know enough about what they currently do vs what full time would mean. I can only speculate that since they are working only part time that there are opportunities where they could devote more time to the officiating role.

This was the first game in a very long time I felt was flagged for ratings purposes.

Penalties given that extended drives and penalties ignored that made the game hang in the balance the whole way.

This crew called it both ways but called it so insanely tight such that the insane, pointless punt illegal formation on Tyrus Wheat was called for being a couple inches off the line. Just goofy stuff that didn't make a difference to the play itself.

Others might disagree, but I thought they missed things on both sides, so it was fair to me.

Yeah part-time isn't what folks think it means. Even as a basic ms/hs basketball ref, I reffed all year along. I went to clinics, took certifications, and had to work out to stay in shape. But if someone wants to tell me diff what a full-time ref position would look like, I'm open to hearing it.

This isnt a rag on the refs for blown calls or anything like that. This is a thread to discuss how unwatchable these flag happy, camera time seeking officials are ruining this game.

The game last night should have been over probably an hour before it was, but due to flags the game went on forever. It seemed it was almost every other play. It was sickening. On both sides. This was apparent on Sunday as well.

For a league with the amount of money the NFL has to employ such inept, and attention starved officials is not ok. No one wants to watch a game where you have to check the field after every play to see if its coming back.

This needs to be fixed. I dont even know how they can go about it, but something needs to be done. This game is becoming unwatchable.
Just don’t know how it’s fixed, each group of refs call it differently. It’s very tough to watch games like this but it wasn’t like they were phantom calls and Dallas is a very penalty oriented team has been since MM took over

Thats not what I am saying. I didnt say it was fixed at all. I am saying the referees like to hear themselves talk. Remember the Oakland game? Thanksgiving 2022. 6 hour game

I completely understand blowing calls and missing calls in the heat of the action we’re all human and it’s hard with the speed of the game. But when plays are reviewed and egregious calls are missed or the wrong call is made and they have plenty of time to analyze, that is inexcusable. See the Turpin “muffed” punt

Incredibly frustrating to watch how they can't even be consistent from one crew to the next about lining up in the freaking neutral zone or what constitutes an OL being too far back off the line. O-linemen and DBs holding like there's no tomorrow and this crew is exploring the nuances of just about everything else!

The punt turnover was atrocious

You cannot block a player into the returner who calls for a fair catch. Especially while facemasking him the entire time.

Said the same thing to my buddy last night watching the game. The fact that it's more noticeable in primetime games tells you everything you need to know.

First time I've ever been bored before halftime in a Cowboys game.

STOP calling ticky tack holding. As we were discussing last night, when an OL is engaged w/ a DL and the ball carrier is running by them, it will take a split second for the OL to disengage. What looks like holding in Slo-mo is not actually holding. It is simply the slight jersey tug as the OL is disengaging. Watch it at full speed, it looks completel4y different.

This is the primary culprit.

I dont know. I think it has more to do with overall mediocre coaching, the quality of offensive line play declining league wide for years, and the mentality league wide both players and owners that results dont matter because no matter what i am going be cashing huge checks.
No, it has almost everything to do w/ only allowing one practice w/ pads on during the week.

Most of the calls on both teams were legit.

Refs got ticky tack because the teams were being sloppy.

Yup. It's the NFL that needs to change how the refs call a game, it's not on the refs. NFL has them confused.

No, they weren't. The holding calls were mere jersey tugs as the Linemen disengaged. That is not legit.

There's a lot of truth here....unfortunately while the cowboys do benefit sometimes from missed calls I do think if we added it all up we would probably have more that go against us than dont...not sure if any analysis has ever been done but would be very interesting to see.

I'm sure every fan base feels this...except the Patriots
It's not true. Fans think more calls go against them purely from perception. Since a fan is rooting for one team, they are only going to see it from a fan's perspective.

Thinking the calls are against you is being said on every NFL fan board across the NFL. Nature of fanhood.

They were equal on both sides. I am good with that. Cowboys made mistakes and they were called. They only call I didn't like was the late hit/helmet hit on their QB. He's dancing around in space and then all of a sudden slides? It's tough to pull back as a defender going at full speed. We protect the QB way too much.
But the hit on Dak that bent head neck back when he was already down didn't get flagged.

Personally, I think if the tackler is already committed in his tackling position and the QB (or any ball carrier) then moves into a position, such as sliding, lowering his head, etc., it shouldn't be a penalty.

You would think the most lucrative sports business in the world, would have full time refs and much better quality of refs at that.
It's not about qualifying the refs, it's about streamlining the rulebook. Refs are simply confused at this point. For several years, no one even really knew what a catch was.
