Finally, football has come, and the games have begun. So so happy!
After week 1, there are some very telling things and there are some things we can speculate on. Here is what I came away with.
The offense seemed to have taken what was given to them. This seems to be very evident, given the amount of posts in threads about it. I was annoyed at the performance while watching the game, and my emotions were getting the best of me. But after settling down a bit, I realized what was happening and why it was happening.
49 passes attempted, 33 attempted at the half I think?
Dink-and-dunk, dink-and-dunk was the name of the game. But it was a necessary game to play and brought a win. The Giants did an excellent job containing Dez, double-covering him and keeping him from getting separation. Austin played his role well with 10 catches underneath, moving the chains. Same with Witten and his 8. The rookie had some pretty key drops in the game and mental mistakes. Rookie jitters, definitely. But he has to learn to catch with his hands or else you can expect more balls bouncing off his chest. I assume like the young professional he is, he will learn from his mistakes and grow to better himself. He has some game, the potential is there but it is up to him to convert and unleash it.
Did anybody else notice when Romo came back in the second half, his throws seemed off, short? I thought it was obvious he was feeling the pain from that hit, especially on the deep throw to Dez. Hopefully he takes this week to heal up and come back better.
The run game I wouldn't say is non-existent, but there are same glaring troubles when running to the right. But, I do think the dink-and-dunk for this game was an extension to the run game and was much needed. Demarco's 8 catches was evident of this and although I would like more on the ground, I was happy to see the adjustments in the passing game to compensate for the inability to run the ball more effectively. There were a couple times where I felt Demarco could have bounced to the outside and he ran inside, so I am eager to see how Dunbar performs when we get him back, as I think the passing game to the running backs will get better with him here, along with the ability to bounce outside when needed. If there was something to be desired in the run game, it is the ability to run the clock out at the end of the game. This seems to still be a problem that I hope they can fix when they get Brian Waters in the lineup.
Overall, the offense played very well and the first pick in Frederick is a great pick. Leary looked good and strong, and Tyron performed like the first rounder he is. MackyB is definitely the weak link and I cannot wait to see him as a depth piece rather than a key piece on the starting line. That first sack on Romo, that guy was on skates and was just powered back.
The defense was not bad, but not good. But they did create 6 turnovers. If it is one thing we talked about all offseason it was the defense's inability to create turnovers and be more opportunistic. That first Cruz TD was broken coverage and they were confused as hell. They should be more alert out there. Church was out there making plays and it was good to see him doing so. I was really impressed by the Cowboys line, especially in the first half. They did a great job creating pressure. Eli trys to never let the boys sack him, even if it means throwing up a duck that could get picked. Dude hates being touched. Bruce Carter was all over the place and that was great to see. Come towards the end of the second half, you can see the Dline start to get winded a bit, but came back and got the second wind in the end to continue to put pressure on Eli. It was a good performance from Ware and the reserves, lol. I expect a much better performance when Spencer and Rat get back. Meanwhile, Selvie is awesome and Hayden looked active.
Special Teams, good job.
Overall, I was glad we got a lead, held a lead and won. It was good to see an opportunistic defense, and I assume given more play time in the new scheme, they will only grow and gel to get better. Eli threw 400+yds, but as people say about Romo's numbers, he was behind and had to play catchup.
I was glad to see the adjustments in the game plan to shorter, quicker passes. Although, when given three turnovers in the beginning I would like for a little more (not a lot) risk and take advantage of our WR skills on the DBs. There is talent there and they can make some plays and we should have gotten at least 1 TD during that span. Turnovers are nice but is we cannot score off them, they can become meaningless. However, more turnovers in games means more opportunities and the opportunities were what was missing.
There is a lot to look forward to this season, and a lot to pay attention to.
The defense should only get better, this being their first regular season together. The line will hopefully improve when berny is not in the lineup and Waters is thrown in there. If the line improves the running game improves. If the running game improves, the offense improves. The offense improves, the team improves. If the defense improves and creates turnovers, the offense gets more chances to score. Again, it all benefits the team as a whole. Thank you Marinelli for coaching up that puzzle of line out there.
Lets hope to some speedy and good recovery from those injured and beat the Chiefs!
