I just got my check from my old job where I worked at for 8 years. It's a check from that profit sharing benefit. I got a pretty nice chunk of change. I'm not going to say how much but I will say it was between 10 to 15 thousand bucks. About 60% is the bank. The other percent I've paid some bills, the rent, credit cards, mother's day gifts and most important of all comboy memorabilia.

I got me 4 jerseys. I got me an Emmitt Smith, Roger Staubach, Demarcus Ware, and Jason Witten jersey. All of them authentic. I also got me that DVD where it has the 10 greatest games in cowboy history. It includes all 5 cowboy super bowl victories. I also got me 2 t-shirts, a jacket for next winter, 4 hats, 2 posters, 2 dress shirts, and I don't know how many pens for my desk. I'm so happy. Nothing can ruin my mood.

Now, with the money I have to get me tickets for atleast the first game. I want to be able to remember I was one of the first people to witness the first game in the new stadium. When do tickets go on sale? A site where I can buy them on line. Common guys give me all kinds of tickete information. I need it man.

In any event, I have all kinds of cowboys stuff added to my already huge cowboy memorabilia collection. I'm not just a fan, I am completely obsessed with this team. Don't ask me why I just am ok. Nothing wrong with that. I just hope my wife doesn't get mad for going to the first ever cowboy game at the new stadium rather than celebrating her birthday. I would take her to the game but she can't stand football.

Heh...I would gladly take your wife seat at that first game in the new stadium.:D

Out of curiosity...

I have a vested interest program like this where I work as well. We get bi-annual reports on where we stand. I'm 100% vested as of last year. The money is going to be paid to me over the course of four years...five years after I leave.

My question for you....how much was taken out tax wise? Are you able to tell from what you've received?

I had a similar story to yours about 5 years ago.
I was laid off from a company I had worked at for 14 yrs and I to had a 401k and an ESOP(Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Did not change it to the new company I was working for but when my old company got bought out I had to make a decision about my funds from my old company. At the time I was living paycheck to paycheck and I needed the money so I took the immediate tax hit and just took the money out and put it in the bank. A lot of people tried to advise me to rollover the money to my new company's 401k plan...but I needed the money where I could use it to payoff debts etc...
Turns out I made the correct decision...you see the company I worked for and continue to work for is AIG.

That was probably your best bet. So many people are focused on the socking away money in a tax-deferred company plan while carrying higher interest credit card debt.

We all need to save for retirement, but the only debt you should be carrying while contributing to a 401k, is home mortgage debt.

The one exception to this is if the company offers a match on some of the dollars you contribute. In that case your basically passing up free money if you don't contribute.

If I wanted the money immediately I would've only received 60% of the money, not included taxes. But since I waited a year I got all of it and had almost 5,000 taken out on taxes alone.
