and play three playoff games on the road best case scenario. You continue to demonstrate week after week that you know not a damn thing about pro football.

I like having the bye, a lot, but I would gladly sacrifice homefield in the NFC Championship for playing better football than what we've played the last month.

This is a hard question to answer. You like to go into the playoffs hot....but, the bye is great.

Right now, I take what we have. There's a reason teams want the number one seed.

I couldn't imagine going into the playoffs in the condition we're in. TO, Newman, Ratliff, Gurode all hurting.......

Thank goodness for the bye.

Yes because that happens all the time in NFL playoff history.

Oh and to answer the question. Thank GOD for the bye.

Great thread Larry. This is something that everybody, be it chicken littles or Commanders fans, need to ask themselves. I'll give some Skins fans credit for understanding this already, it's just sad to see some Cowboys fans not understand this.

What's funny is that this happened last year with Chicago who have a far lesser QB than Romo and they wound up making the Super Bowl. HFA isn't a guarantee, but it's clearly an advantage and people getting all upset because the 'Boys lost a game where they had no motivation to win is pretty ridiculous.

Winning on the road is much harder, especially as you get later into the season. Now, I would take a *healthier* squad and sacrifice home field, although it's still not that easy of a decision.

I guess I'm going to have to research how teams with HFA do in the postseason over the years. For every Steelers of '05, my guess is that those teams with HFA have a knack for making the Super Bowl.

Didn't Troy and Buck say today that 6 of the last 8 NFC number 1 seeds (which ='s home field advantage obviously) made it to the SuperBowl?

I think that itself shows some level of advantage. I'd also be interested to see how far teams with byes go compared to teams without byes. I mean sheesh, it's one less game out of 3 max games needed to get to the SuperBowl. Winning 2 is much easier than winning 3 at any time no?

Obviously 13-3, ive seen alot of teams like the Commanders get a hot streak going and fizzle on the road wild card weekend, seattle is a tough place to play i think the clock is about to strike 12 for todd collins and the deadskins.

For what it's worth since 1990 (when current playoff format started)
1990:
San Francisco(lost conf title)
Buffalo (lost SB) SB champion Giants (Bye)
1991
Washington (won SB
Buffalo (lost SB)
1992
San Francisco (lost conf title)
Pittsburgh (lost div playoff) SB champion: Dallas (Bye)
1993
Dallas (won SB)
Buffalo (lost SB)
1994
San Francisco (won SB)
Pittsburgh (lost conf title)
1995
Dallas (won SB)
Kansas City (lost div playoff)
1996
Green Bay (won SB)
Denver (lost div playoff)
1997
San Francisco (lost conf title)
Kansas City (lost div playoff) SB champion: Denver -no bye
1998
Minnesota (lost conf title)
Denver (won Super Bowl)
1999
St, Louis (won SB)
Jacksonville (lost conf title)
2000
NYG (Lost SB)
Tennessee (lost div playoff) SB champion- Baltimore-nobye
2001
St,Louis (lost SB)
Pittsburgh (lost conf title) SB champion- New England-bye
2002
Philadelphia (lost conf title)
Oakland (lost SB) SB champion Tampa Bay- Bye
2003
Philadelphia (lost conf title)
New England (won SB)
2004
Philadelphia (lost SB)
Pittsburgh (lost conf title) SB champion- New England-Bye
2005
Seattle (lost SB)
Indianapolis (lost div playoff) SB champion Pittsburgh-no bye
2006
Chicago (lost SB)
San Diego(lost div playoff) SB champion Indianapolis-nobye

So, In the NFC, 11 out of 17 teams that had HFA advanced to the Super Bowl. 6 of those 11 won the Super Bowl with the most recent being 1999. 6 of the 17 with HFA advanced to the conf title game at least

In the AFC things are a little more mixed up. 6 out of 17 teams with HFA advanced to the Super Bowl with only the 1998 Broncos and 2003 Patriots winning the Super Bowl. 4 advanced to the conf title game and 7 times the team with HFA was eliminated in the first round.

8 times a team from either con ference with HFA went on to win the Super Bowl. 13 out of the past 17 years a team with a first round bye a team has won the Super Bowl. Out of the 34 Super Bowl teams in the past seventeen years,17 had HFA in thier respective conferences. Also, of these 34 teams 27 had a first round bye.

No personal offense meant, but this is a very stupid thread in my opinion. No travel, home crowd, a week off to rest and heal injuries. And THE most important aspect of it is that we don't play next week. You can't lose if you don't play. Every time you take the field, you can lose. We can't lose next week, so if anyone says they'd rather be in the Foreskin's shoes, they're an idiot.

It's a rhetorical question, not a stupid one.

I take the HFA and the bye every time. I agree with what Larry Brown said on the Cowboys Insiders. There is no on and off switch you go out and execute and if you do that then you win. What has taken place in these past games do not mean anything nor have a bearing about what is going to happen in the upcoming game. In 95 Dallas went 2-2 in Dec including a loss to Philly but when the playoffs came around Dallas ripped Philly 30 to 11 and went on to the SB and beat Pitt. Injuries to key players clearly could have a major effect on winning but this bye at least gives Dallas an opportunity to get these players back at 100% or close to it.

windward!

Thanks for clarifying the original intent of the thread for that poster. I appreciate it all the more since I was the one who started the thread, hehe.

There is excellent thread recently started that shows the last 17 years of SuperBowl finalists!

I think the stat was 27 of 34 teams that made it to the big dance HAD A 1st ROUND BYE!

If that's not telling I don't know what is! Our record and standing helps us in a big way. Staying sharp and focussed is on the coaches and players now, but they put themselves in a good position and deserve credit not scorn.

Cheers, and Happy New Year all.

Doh! Hehe. Now I just noticed that Windward posted that nice summary thread about HFA and also put it in this thread as well.

Maybe I am stupid after all, hehe.

Cheers, and nice work winward. Pretty much can't argue with those statistics.

Yeah I decided to make it it's own thread where it would get more visibility.

As someone said you can't lose if you don't play. I'd rather be slumping with a week off while someone else eliminates an opponent for me. Plus I really like the fact that the Championship game would be in my home stadium. The Dallas Cowboys recent playoff games on the road, seem to bother me some nights still...

How many years have the skins done this? Look at marty's record and joe's and it will say they always win 5, lose 6, win 4 lose 5 etc..... but don't do ANYTHING in the PO's since 1991.

They are 1 and done, BOOK IT:eek: :)

Gibbs has never been 1 and done in his career, including 2 seasons ago when he went to tampa and came back with the W..GIBBS wins in december and he makes some noise in da playoffs..seattle better be ready!!

While it is true Dallas was the first wild card to win a SB way back when I will take the NFC champion route myself. They have won more as champions than as wildcards.

I don't think that's right. The Cowboys were the first wild-card to reach the Super Bowl but loss against the Steelers. If I'm not mistaken, the Raiders are the first wild-card team to win a Super Bowl.
