zoners, a fan called in and said that when mcbrair holds the ball, he is holding the ball with both hands.

a few years back, we were missing field goals with charlie waters, and when he put the ball down, his top index finger would come off the ball, his 4th finger too and he would look up at the ball. I saw that and wrote tex schramn, got a thank you letter back, charlie didnt miss any more holds

this fan called in on thefan and mentioned this to the guys on the show, and said why wouldnt coach joe d have not noticed that/.

so thats why im asking and seeing what you think

i do know like charlie waters holding, sometimes coaches look and look at film and miss stuff,

just something i thought i would put out there and see what or anyone thought was a good idea to get back to the cowboys

Oh, by the way, the fan that called in, said he was a coach that taught special teams in high school etc and he knew what he was seeing, so thought i would see what you all thought

As Folk said he like the ball more up and down. I would think different kickers want the ball held the way they like it.

As a former kicker I always liked the ball straight up, no tilt. With one finger holding the ball "lightly". Some people think you have to push down on the ball which isn't the case. But like the other guy said, each kicker is different.

I think more than how he holds it, it is important where he holds it.

The ball needs to be placed down where the kicker expects it to be.

If it is out in front of the spot, he might pull it, like last week.

If it is back some from where it is supposed to be, it could get pushed Right.

That's a good point. Briar made mention that he dosent wait for the football he goes after it. That could throw a kicker off a bit.

Yeah, it's exactly like addressing a golf ball incorrectly.

The way I prefer is by making the other team do it while we score touchdowns.

If only Garrett would give the ball to Felix more/start Choice/run playaction/run rollouts/let Marion be a closer/stop running draws/stop running out of Shotgun/send Witten down the seam/throw slants to Roy/throw fades to Roy/get Martellus the ball then we wouldn't have to worry about FG's.

I'd rather our D stop the other team short of FG range.

From the little that I've studied this (and it was only a little, like part of a random DVD), it depends on a few things. Ball should be held straight up and down when there's no wind and you don't need an adjusted angle (ie 60 yard attempts), and it's up to the kicker to alter the direction of the kick by moving the plant foot further forward or backwards.

The hold should be altered for high/low angle kicks or for long kicks when windy to curve the trajectory without losing kick power, but that could also be left up to the kicker too (by altering the plant foot, but that's not at full power).

That hold method is to keep the kicker from having to adjust their approach and kick. They don't have to crouch their plant foot more to kick the ball at a lower point or be more stiff to hit the ball at a higher point. They just practice their one approach and kicking motion, set up based on hash/distance, approach and kick.
