Smith is in the same boat as several other Cowboys players - he is in an evaluation year. Play better (at the least) or play much better (probably) or he's gone, too high a contract to keep him....

Hopefully we'll get rid of him and LVE eventually.

Smith has never lived up to his hype.

LVE did his rookie year, then injuries came along.

Injuries can go away, low quality play usually does not. I guess the best scenario is that Smith "blossoms" playing under Quinn, since he's under contract for 4 more years we'll know what his cost will be, and if the cap jumps up as expected, he'll be a good value.

LVE is a problem. If he plays very well, it's going to cost a ton to keep him. If he does not then he's probably gone, and we'll have to hope like heck Parsons and Cox turn out great, otherwise Cowboys will have to draft yet ANOTHER linebacker to replace him, and 255 lb LBs with 4.65 speed ain't easy to find....
