Bell is an OT who was just visiting Packers.

Bell is "a former undrafted free agent who played four seasons with Carolina, racking up 41 starts at right tackle in his first three seasons. In 2014, he started all 16 games at left tackle and then signed as a free agent with the Tennessee Titans. Bell started 16 games in 2015 and then dislocated his ankle during OTAs in 2016. He missed that entire season."

What's it going to be then, eh?

A guy like this would make me feel better about losing Leary who could move around
Leary was pretty much tied to guard though.

Bell makes sense because he has started at LT and RT in the league.

That is a lot better than players like Tony Hills and Charles Brown who we have had as a backup swing tackle. If his ankle checks out, that's good enough.

The Cowboys have enjoyed depth and stability on their offensive line, but now have to look around for options.

Friday, they brought in a guy with some decent starting experience.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Cowboys had former Panthers and Titans offensive lineman Byron Bell in for a visit. He has also met with the Packers this week.

Bell didn’t play last year after an ankle injury suffered in OTAs, but started 72 games over his first five seasons. He was a solid-to-good right tackle for the Panthers, but was in over his head when they moved him to left tackle, and they brought in Michael Oher as an upgrade. He played both guard and tackle for the Titans, starting all 16 games in 2015.

The Cowboys are looking at their options after losing Ronald Leary in free agency and Doug Free to retirement.

hard to believe a solid to good RT is available with other RTs going for 6M-9M AAV.
wonder how bad the ankle is...
a 340lb on a bad ankle is obviously not a good thing.

Columbo had a very serious knee injury for two plus years, his signing worked out well for the Cowboys......we're talking about adding some depth to the Oline and he has experience so I think it would be a good move to bring him in..

But why experiment at this stage of camp by moving right tackle Byron Bell — who’s played tackle all four of his previous NFL seasons — into that left guard position?

Titans offensive line coach Bob Bostad explained there are at least a couple of good reasons Bell might make a good fit at left guard: past practices and potential.

Partly because of injuries — which forced Levitre to play center — Bell saw some action at guard during organized team activities and minicamp, impressing Bostad and others on the coaching staff.

“In the spring, we noticed he was a nifty guy in the (guard) reps we gave him,” Bostad said. “We actually had him at left guard as soon as we had him in here. So this isn’t one of those deals where we said, 'Oh, gee whiz, why don’t we do this?’ We had watched him all spring and said, 'You know, the kid has some ability inside.’ ”

Some might assume that moving from tackle to guard isn’t all that difficult, since tackle is considered a more challenging overall position than guard, but Bostad said not every tackle can make the transition.

“It’s a whole different world on the inside, a different style of play. You have to have a certain level of athleticism and there are some other things you have to be good at," Bostad said. "You just can’t take it for granted that some guy on the outside is going to walk in and play inside.”

The 6-foot-5, 340-pound Bell hadn’t played a lot of guard in training camp up until the past few days. But he said he’s enjoying the switch so far, noting the experience he received playing guard during OTAs has helped.

“I think things have been going good — just learning how to play tighter corners now after being out on that edge,” Bell said. “But I like it in there. I get up on guys quick and I think my girth — my size — helps me out a lot. I feel like I move pretty good in there and I play strong.”

If we sign him, he's probably going to be looked at as someone who can start at RT. Chaz and Cleary both have swing tackle capabilities and this guy seems like an exclusive RT in the mold of Columbo.

Like it. Adding this guy would make me feel more comfortable about the RT position.

Experience and age are on his side. Between he, Collins, Green and Cleary, there is surely a starter there.

Any chance his middle name is taco? Because he sure looks like he's been there...Alot:omg:

I've come to one conclusion....about our free agent signings. If anyone wants them. We can't sign them.

Nope..Our guys have to be bottom of the barrel. No exceptions. Have to have been waived...and unclaimed multiple times. And even then...they still have to play for minium league wages.

You just can't make this stuff up anymore. We just have to set the bar so low...not even Cleveland can touch our ineptness.

We may be the only NFL who values depth more than starters.

This doesn't get me overly enthused. Bell has been terrible as a tackle and I don't see where he would be any better option at guard than anyone we already have.
