OL Run Block Win Rate

Oline hasn’t been perfect as of late but I’ll continue to argue they are not the biggest reason for the offensive struggles the last few weeks. Teams have adjusted to the cowboys and continue to play with extra guys in the box, and bring extra rushers against the pass. Until this pass offense can consistently make teams pay for playing tight man coverage on our WRs I cant see it getting better. Oline can win their individual assignments, but if you have 8 players in the box vs 6 on the oline its still tough to have success.

Much like you need the run and pass to complement each other your lineman and skill players need to complement each other as well.

Not sure if teams have found the magic formula to slow down the Cowboys or we just need to get guys healthy. Either way it seems teams are focused on bringing extra people up front, and counting on drops & inaccurate passes to slow down drives. The last few weeks they have been correct in doing so.

Or someone's hitting the wrong holes, or hitting the right holes at the wrong time.
Zeke may not be as explosive as he used to be but one thing I don’t worry about with him is missing assignments. He’s as good as there is at pass protection and reading his blocks.

Yep. Zeke has been a hobbled shell of himself and Dak hasn’t been at his best lately.

If they step up, the OL will look much better.

Author makes the following case:

Teams aren’t completely selling out to stop the run but they are clearly loading up. That’s not to say defenses are opening up a ton of opportunities deep either. While things change considerably play to play and game to game, the holes seem to be in the intermediate areas. That’s where the Cowboys must attack.

As far as a general comment:

Teams traditionally play us man. If your blocking is elite, even “average” DBs are going to get open against man, because no DB can cover a WR that long. That’s why defenses traditionally play zone against ELITE QBs.

Man is actually the coverage you want, with loaded talent at the skill positions like we have at WR. It’s obvious that our starting WRs can beat most DBs in man coverage. Obviously, when they get healthy, beating the bad teams is almost a given.

It’s the threat of the run that forces them out of zone, but then it’s all about the run putting you in manageable situations, particularly third down.

I’d very much like to see the running game issues fixed. That’s why the offense was elite at one point in the season and why they’re not right now.

Yep. Dak throwing a bunch is not the way.

Dallas with a lead and Balance is an entirely different team than Dallas playing catch up and throwing 40 times.

We’re only as good as our run game. Whatever Dak adds is just a bonus.

100% This. Not to say Dak cant be an elite QB, but he hasn't as of late. Opportunities have been there, the Cowboys just need to take them.

One thing i've noticed on Dak is that he is really good pre snap and reading defenses and picking up on blitzers. Post snap he has been atrocious in his reads. Not all on Dak either, the WRs have had significantly more drops than usual lately.

...but but but....so many say Dak isn;t performing well because the o-line has played like crap. Hmmmm.....
The O line has been WAY underperforming compared to earlier in the year. Do you even watch the games?

This is a TOTALLY lame stupid statistic! The running game is WAY more than an O lineman’s individual grade( which the grades are even totally bogus). How do the lineman block together? How is everyone else blocking together( receivers, TE’s, RB’s )? Are the run plays designed well? etc. etc.

NE is not in the top 15? That alone should tell you how meaningless that lame stupid statistic is!

I really find this hard to believe. I know the Cowboys have Tyron, Zack and La'el, but they have not looked good for over a month. I am also surprised that the WFT leads the league. But if the two lines are this close, one should just offset the other. The game plan is the same. Get the WFT in 3rd and long situations and make them throw downfield.

One thing I noticed about the WFT run blocking, when they pull to run outside they are pretty effective creating space for Gibson to run through. The Cowboys DL needs to get penetration early and disrupt those runs.

The quoted article stated the following:

SINCE WEEK SIX, PASSING ON EARLY DOWNS HAS A SUCCESS RATE OF 21.2% MORE THAN RUNNING THE BALL.

This has been a Moore trend, i.e. throwing more on the early downs, as opposed to Linehan. I looked at the full play by play of the Saints game and 4 out of the 6 drives, in the first half, we threw on first down to start a series. And an additional 7 throws on 1st down and 2 more runs, if we converted a series into a new set of downs.

That is 11 passes on first down and 4 runs…

I didn’t bother to check the second half, but it looks like we actually tried to throw to set up the run. It just didn’t work.

But like I said, the Saints have a great run defense, they played us primarily in zone from what I saw. I don’t think they even needed to bring additional men in the box most of the time. And Dak has not shown any ability to challenge the zone with his arm. His reads, like you said, on the field are way too slow and he ends up throwing the Checkdown.
