after all these years, i thought we were robbed on the Colts Super Bowl 5 TD reception, that another Colts player touched before. The rule at the time was if a pass is thrown and tipped/touched by a member of the same team, another player on the same team cannot catch the ball and be a completion.

well, I beat the hell out of my Dad's "Aqua Green" Vynal recliner cussing at the TV that we were robbed (i was 10, so do the math)

Welp 38 years later, I watched the NFL's America's game recap of that Super Bowl, and the "NFL FILMS" replay of that pass (from the greatness of Johnny U), and $#@@#%$ it if yes a Cowboys defender did touch the ball between the 2 Colt players and alter the spin on the ball.

I stood there in the living room with my grill cooking spatula, yelled at my widescreen, and said "NO WAY, well I'll be @#$%#ed. after all these years, we weren't robbed".

oh well, dang it. damn

I'll fall back on Duane Thomas letting a Colt steal the ball from him in a pile-up.

Dave Manders came up with that fumble but they gave it to the Colts anyway. :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:

Sorry Dude, I still do not see where the ball changed direction. Renfro does go for it, but I do not see where he did touch it. But, as others have said, that is not where that Super Bowl was lost. The botched call on Thomas' fumble is THE PLAY WE GOT ROBBED ON! AS Tom Landry said, Colts Linebacke Billy Ray Smith only did one thing right that day. On that play, he jumped up and down, yelling "Colts Ball!" and the Refs listened. I tend to agree with Bob Lilly. If Dallas scores there, they are ahead by two scores. There was no way Lilly and Co. would have allowed them to comeback and win.
Anyone else, besides me, think that Reeves should have caught Morton's pass that was intercpted and lead to the Colts game winning field goal? It hit Dan in his hands. I grant that the pass was high, but I think it was catchable.
I hate that game for so many reasons. I think Dallas should have destroyed Baltimore that day. The Cowboys were the better team:banghead:

sorry dude, but watch it again. There is NO DOUBT a Cowboy altered the ball.

get the DVD out, and play in slow-mo the play where they were talking about the Colts offensive lineman who blocked inside initially, then went outside and blocked Lilly at the knees. Then slow-mo the pass from Unitas. Your jaw will drop just like mine did.

Yup, we touched it, no question. He did alter the spin of the ball.

Remember, this view from NFL films is from the "opposite side" of what the NFL broadcast was. I remember even which side the broadcast cameras were.

go check it again. I had to replay that twice to believe it.

I was at Travis AFB that day,and only got to see the first half before getting on the World Airways flight to rotate overseas. I didn't know how it came out for a long time. What a bummer way to start a tour of duty.

Little before my time. But I know my Cowboys history and have seen this game replayed a few times.

As I was reading through this thread a thought came to me.....
Anyone see a parallel between SBV and this years playoff loss to the Giants.

Mel Renfro did not touch that ball. He denies it to this day.

The phantom fumble is more galling. Dave Manders got the ball, came out of the pile with it, and the Colts never had it, yet they were awarded the ball.

We had the wrong qb starting that game in my opinion.
But it's easy to play monday morning qb after all these years.

Exactly. Thomas did not fumble that ball. A Colt defender took it after the whistle blew, and the Refs gave it to them. :banghead:
They still had their chances to win it though.

The one thing that will always stick out from that game? Lilly throwing his helmet after the game.

ON THE NOSEY.

THAT was the play on which we wuz robbed.

Then again, the Cowboys were awful that day...three trips inside the ten yard line, with I think 6 points to show for it. Not good.

And a classic Craig Morton choke.

Everything changed when Roger took over.

We had 4 turnovers that day and a couple of them were while we were trying to move the ball to win the game. Choke is right.

Baltimore turned it over to us 7 times in the game.

They called that game the Blunder Bowl for a good reason. A lot of penalties too.
