Olinemen Drafted by the Cowboys in the past 10 drafts (Not for the Weak)

Did Solomon Page have one of the more precipitous falls of a Cowboys player in team history? He was above-average in 2000 and 2001 and suddenly was a lazy slob.

I agree, he was actually a decent RT. Not to the pre-accident Erik Williams level, but he played well. Then something happened, and he plummeted so badly the team didn't even make an offer to bring him back.

He made a quick stop in SD, but didn't pan out.

Who would you fellas say are the best 5 OLs in football right now?

I would go with NE, SD, Denver, NO and prob the Eagles.

Hostile's point not withstanding ....

Try this exercise -- find the most recent 4 or 5 Pro Bowl rosters, get the names of the OLs, and then check on how high they were drafted.

It is surprising just how many Pro Bowl OLs, particularly OTs, were taken in the first round or two of their draft.

Since OL performance is a hard thing to quantify, you can get by on name alone for awhile. If you had a good 2-3 years of dominance, you've sealed your pro-bowl invite for 5-6. Ogden has been half what he was the last two years, still makes the pro-bowl. Walter Jones dropped off big this year, I think he still made the pro-bowl. Our man Larry, made it for years and didn't deserve it. Didn't Marco Rivera make it one year here?

The most important thing on the Oline is that they all be sound, and they get to work with each other continuously for years. That cohesiveness is more important than any blue-chipper. Blue-chips don't hurt, and looking back over the past few first and second rounders, teams are batting around .500 around the league - but the percentage in the first round seems alot higher. The most important thing is that they be physically capable. Working together as a unit for an extended period makes them greater than the sum of their parts.

What irks me, is how many of those guys are still in the league, but playing for other teams. Or how many of them at least put in more time on another team than they did in Dallas before exiting the league.

Marco Rivera - 10M sigingin bonus (which equates to a mid first rounder)
Kyle Kosier - 5M signing bonus (which equates to a later first rounder)

10M does not equate for a mid-first rounder. Why? Because it didn't cost a pick!!!!!!

You forget however, that Parcells has developed Gurode into a quality center -- this was a guy who most folks on this board figured wouldn't be with us this year since he'd pretty much worn out his welcome over 4 years. Parcells also pulled Columbo off the scrap heap and turned him into a quality RT.

What did both of those cost (in terms of Bill's picks or contracts)? A big can of nuthin'.

If you are going to point to the failures you also have to mention the successes.

And the biggest OL busts go in the top 10. Go figure:)

There are always going to be a few busts in the top of the draft regardless of position but Olinemen drafted in the top ten are among the safest picks there are.

Here are the O-line guys who went top 10 in the last 10 years - a few studs (Pace, W Jones, possibly D'Brick) -- some pretty solid starters in Naole, Samuels, Jones, Gross, and McKinnie (generously) -- and some mediocre players and busts filling out the list. These guys don't blow me away really -- kind of a mixed bag.

D'Brick #4 2006
Robert Gallery #2 2004
Jordan Gross #8 2003
Mike Williams #4 2002
Bryant McKinnie #7 2002
Levi Jones #10 2002
Leonard Davis - #2 2001
Chris Samuels - #3 2000
Kyle Turley - #7 1998
Orlando Pace - #1 1997
Walter Jones - #6 1997
Chris Naole -- 10th overall 1997

I have to agree with Wayne. The best OLmen go early ... and often, VERY early. Most of the top LT's are all top 10 picks.

I think OG is a position where you can get by in the 2nd and 3rd round. Same with Center. But LT is a drop dead high first round pick. The talent drops off considerably after that.

the better teams in the league clearly show this isnt the case

6 Super Bowl wins between Dallas and New England since 1992...

Folks we've got some serious issues with selecting Olinemen. It didn't get any better after Parcells took over. We got some production from Flozell, Gurode and Johnson, but we haven't found a "player" on the Oline since we drafted Larry Allen back in 1994. Thats is more than a decade:bang2: :banghead:

the problem is a combination of guys not working out and very poor OL coaching...some of the guys on this list were VERY highly regarded...Adams, Page and Rogers were all considered 1st rd pick talents..Gurode was rated a borderline 1st rd pick...Al Johnson was highly regarded too

when you have the Verducci's and Sporano's coahcing the OL isntead of Tony Wise's and Hudson Houck's, you can see the problem pretty clearly

David

Page was highly regarded coming out and had 1 good year, then went to the Chargers where even Houck couldn't get to him. As much crap as Sparano gets I think he did a pretty good job with Colombo this year, I know he was a 1st round pick but he hadn't played in what almost 2 years.
