as for the games, i havent been able to watch many, but i did see most of the uruguay game, they played well after they got scored on. brazil was classic bipolar brazil, and spain losing was a big surprise. kind of thinking that it will be brazil/uruguay in the finals now.

Stern has no say in who can play in the olympics. I wouldn't mind it being U23 either but FIBA would be the deciding organization. Having an NBA all-star team out there will draw more money than a U23 team so I doubt anyone besides Stern is willing to do this.

that's not true.

FIBA or the USOC(US basketball delegation can pick whomever they want with US citizenship) can decide, and in some sports that rule already exists, a la Olympic football.

It is goofy for the US to send out the Dream Team version 12.0. Most of these guys wont play international bball at all except in the months leading up to the Olympics. We could use under 23's and actually use players who will improve for the experience.

There would be 1 spot for an over 23. That would allow a late bloomer to still get the experience if they really were worthy and also keen on the idea.

Much like England, GB can't win on penalties

Will probably be Brazil vs Mexico in the finals

The goalkeeper choked in a penalty shoot out? How?

Sturridge wasn't good enough yesterday.

Couldn't finish when he had chances and got greedy at times. Missed the one PK that failed in the shoot out.

As someone said above, Brazil v Mexico. Oscar and Naymar together....
But if Brazil doesn't play defense they'll get beaten. Mexico is no joke. Excellent team at every area.

I'm really not versed in soccer at all.....so, this may seem like a dumb question.

But what is it with the offsides penalty?

I know what it is....but what's the big deal with someone running behind the defense. To me, that's a good play. The defense needs to adjust.

Is there some kind of logic...or is it in place to keep scoring down?

im not entirely sure why the rule came to be, or when it started, but id imagine it would increase scoring a lot of they got rid of it. i wish they would get rid of PKs! i think a better way would be to have an extra overtime, golden goal, with no goalies!

The same concept applies in football. Neither team can start off a play on the oppositions side of the ball. I think it is all about competitive balance between the offense and defense.

I've often wondered about the repercussions of getting rid of the offsides rule. I think scoring might go up a little, but maybe not a significant amount. I think the number of break away goals might go down because defenses would fall back, so some of the excitement may diminish. Hard to say. It is an interesting question.

doing away with off-sides would significantly change the game and the type of players playing it.

it would be like hockey without icing.

it would resemble basketball. you'd simply take a big, athletic player and park them on the goalie.

soccer is about timing and technical skill so the offsides rule helps emphasize those.
