Whether they re-sign him is irrelevant. When he re-signs it will be as a free agent or a free agent to be.
They went 9-7 with Dez Bryant in 2017 and 10-6 without him. Sounds like a significant change worthy of losing a first round draft pick.
Would they have gone 10-6 this year with Dez for the entire season? Would they have been better than 10-6 with Cooper the full season. My opinion is 10-6 was the ceiling with Dez. It would've been the floor with Cooper for a full season based on what happened after he arrived.
The Cooper trade probably is a mistake if they don't extend him and he ends up being here for only a year and a half (or two and a half if they FT him and he plays under - highly unlikely). But to be fair, what was the alternative aside from keeping Dez? They could've drafted Ridley and then either tried to get a LB with their 2nd round and then another starter with their 1st this year. Would Ridley have been the difference maker Cooper was after he got here? And would he have been for the next several years. Maybe, but it does take a WR 1-2 years to reach potential. And this team wouldn't have accomplished what they did last year without LVE and would be in the market for a LB this year.
