Terrell Davis is a classic example of a one cut RB... Think of a stretch running play where the RB cuts back to square his shoulders with the field.

I think of Emmitt as a one-cut back. He didn't waste a lot of time dancing in the backfield.

Once he found a hole, he squared his shoulders, made his cut, .. and ran downhill.

I started to use Emmitt as an example too... I just remember Mike Shanahan talking about how Davis was the one cut style RB he wanted for
his system.

First, it's a mental/vision issue more than a physical issue. Any good RB could physically be a 1 cut back.

A 1 cut back is most associated with the Zone Blocking Scheme. In that scheme the RB must quickly pick a hole and get up-field even if they don't always find he best hole. Most ZBS coaches are more concerned about not losing yards than dancing around loooking for the big play.

The opposite of a 1 cut back is Barry Sanders. He danced around looking for openings. He was spectular but often lost yards also.

It can be mentally difficult for some RBs to just make one cut and go. When they go back and watch the film they will see missed opportunities.

Emmitt often made 1 cut but he also did his fair share of juking people out of their jocks.

Murry doesn't really juke per se. He will obviously make more than 1 move but they are more of a veer to one direction at full speed than a full cut in another direction.

Julius Jones was forced by Parcells to be more of a 1 cut back and it screwed him up.

A 1 cut back can exist in either Zone or Man blocking but if you find some videos that are floating around of the old ZBS coach Alex Gibbs, he is really focused on the back making 1 cut and getting up-field.

Dorsett was a 1 cut back, see the hole and hes gone to the house. Would love to get some of that explosion on this team.

I wouldn't say Dorsett was a one cut RB... he frustrated Landry because he wouldn't stay with the play... had a great short yardage TD against the St. Louis Cardinals
where he started right, then turned his back to the defense and scored on the left side of the field... only then did Landry decide to leave him alone... Landry actually changed
his blocking design to suit Tony after that game.

If someone wanted to know what great vision meant in terms of a RB, I would say watch Tony Dorsett.

Agreed somewhat, Dorsett could certainly dance and juke with the best of them, but when the hole was there he didnt fool around...HE WAS GONE...Like he was shot out of a cannon.

Absolutely.... TD was the man!... loved watching him run.... "shot out of a cannon" is a perfect analogy.

Help me out here if I'm mistaken but I think he won each of the following in one year:

The Heisman Trophy
National Championship
Rookie of the Year
Super Bowl

He also finished his college career as the all time leading rusher. (since broken)

I'm sure the term's been around for years, but I think the Shannahan Denver teams made it prominent again in the league. Basically, a guy who strings out a play moving laterally, often while the OL zone blocking gets set, then plants that outside foot and blows through the hole.

Early in Felix Jones' career he was actually very good at that. Then he'd just bend around the defenders and break some long runs. As he got older and bulkier, he seemed a lot less decisive with his plant and cuts. Or just slower in general. Not nearly as much fun to watch.

Often it means to cut back into a weakside hole. And as another said it is more often in ZBS but doesn't have to be.

I agree for the most part but Murray got some sick juke moves.
