Any player with the ball can become down by going down and making no effort to advance or by sliding feet-first (rules 7-4-1-a and 7-4-1-c).

Link, please. I have seen too many times a player go down and get right back up running and if he was not touched then the play counts.

The plays you are likely referencing are when players accidently lose their feet, or dive etc., but still want to advance. Clearly, they can.

But the difference is intent I believe.

As a side note, why should Adam be required to provide a link and people with an alternate view not? Just curious.

I actually don't think its absurd to expect players to think about clock implications in the closing seconds of games. A player gets criticized for not getting out of bounds, or letting a player get out so its the same principle if an admittedly higher degree of difficulty.

Its a detail, like many others in the game and I think Parcells actually has a reputation for practicing some of those details to be prepared just in case.

I did indeed think about it just as the play ended. But did the tackler (I forget who it was) and/or Hall know the downing rule or other specifics at that point. Often times players and I'll bet even some coaches don't know the rules on some of these obscure plays. That is why Leon cost us the Tgiving snow game vs Miami - he didn't know the rule.

I'm not looking to criticize those that don't know the downing rules but rather it serves as a reminder that its an opportunity for those disciplined enough to learn the details.

any player can give himself up. not sure he could have doen it in 2 seconds but you can simply give up any play and go down and call the time out once they rule you down. no rule against it, but hard to do in 2 seconds

What is so hard about simply taking a knee. That doesn't take long at all. They do it on kick-offs all the time. And you can bet that if the clock ran out the replay booth would check to see just where the clock was when he took a knee.

The player has to be extremely alert but it'd be easy to execute.

If one of our guys had the little squirt in his grasp, let him have some forward progress, and then take him down.

But like Dooms said, it all happens so quick.

Something to talk about though, :D
When the play occured and I saw how much time was on the clock and I thought they should have not touched him and just kind of stood over him and tackled him if he tried to get up. If I remeber right he went down right after the catch and somebody ran up and touched him so they could not have held him up, but I know what your saying.

He could have taken a knee and called timeout.... would ahve been close on time though.. my guess is that Hall would have tried to score and he's not the guy you want to let run around for 2 seconds. Holding him up might have been ok, but Roy was coming too fast to do that, he basically ran him over.

Umpire says: Unnecessary Reference. 15 yards and loss of (some of my) lunch.

IF we didnt down him he would of scored.

I was also thinking about kind of holding him up for 2 seconds but thats way risky and asking a lot of Roy to think about doing

Yes....that was difinetly a risky situation......Go Cowboys!
