One player away

As much as I hate to say it.
Deion.
He took away a WR on his own and freeing up a safety and scheme to be as aggressive as they wanted to be.. Not to mention special team stuff.

Sure it got Barry a Super Bowl ring and that was Jerry's plan to get back at Jimmy but at what cost?

What did the follow up years bring?

Zip, zilch, nada.

Deion, Deion, Deion, was all Jerry talked about.

It's like the triplets and Novacek and Moose didn't matter.

One more trophy but ushered in an early demise to a dynasty.

Me thinks the demise of a dynasty would have happened anyway, But to stay on topic....

The difference that one player (Sean Lee) makes for our defense proves that the 1 player away argument is valid. Now, could Earl Thomas make the difference in the secondary that Lee makes for the defense? If he can, he is worth it!

Deion also went to the 49ers first and won a Super Bowl. Certainly was aided by Barry Switzer.

Is there an example someone can point to where a team signed one player and it propelled them to the title?

Charles Haley I guess?

I just really hate the argument when it's used to support not pursuing talent. The only time I can really justify it is when it's spending like 150 million on a guy like Suh, who will not put you in the title conversation and completely cripple your ability to get any better after the fact. When you're a talented team, and have an opportunity to improve, I don't understand why "are we one player away" is even a valid objection.
its never one person but the acquisition of Preston Pearson for 1975 made a big difference towards getting the conference title that year
also Dorsett in 1977, who coincidentally replaced Pearson

Not recently. It doesn’t work that way in the salary cap era. Unless you’re talking maybe Peyton Manning, but even Denver needed more than just him.
True but they already had the great defense and supporting cast. They just needed a greater QB

Which IMO there are several great defensive teams that need a QB.

Vikings just attempted to do this.

And if Houston finally has a QB with their defense they are prob legit contenders as their defense has carried awful QB’s to the playoffs.

I truly believe if we had a great QB we’d be serious contenders pending our defense is above average.

So , yea .. if you have most of the pieces in place a great QB could be the missing link.

Deion Sanders in 95.

Probably Emmitt Smith, and we are golden baby :omg:

T.O. didn't help the Eagles get even an inch further. At all.

The Eagles made the NFC Conference Championship 3 years in a row before T.O. arrived. The year they made the Super Bowl, T.O. didn't play one snap in the playoffs due to injury...so they got further without his help.

I believe the context was that they never signed anyone to get them further. They signed T.O. and
immediately started talking Super Bowl.
