One question of Chaz Green kicking inside at guard

And this will have nothing to do with backup offensive guard Ronald Leary withholding services, his new agent demanding his client be traded, a request and maneuver without one ounce of leverage since he’s already signed his one-year, $2.553 million restricted free-agent tender absent $1 of guaranteed money or services desperately needed. Their only hope for movement would be someone such as Chaz Green, who hasn’t played a down of football since the end of the 2014 college season, shows enough ability to not only play some tackle, but also guard, too, thus making Leary somewhat expendable for a modest draft choice in return.

That's interesting. His predraft write-up indicates that he has the versatility to possibly play all 5 OL positions. Just needed to work on getting stronger. But I'd definitely rather see him excel at RT than kick inside and essentially be the 3rd-4th OG.

Besides, didn't we sign Looney to be that trusted backup vet OG/OC on gameday? Granted he's probably not as good as Leary but hopefully at least similar to Bernadeau.

But back to Green. I guess we'll find out once we see where he gets reps in training camp and preseason.

I'll wait to see Chaz actually finish a whole season before I start counting on him.

Why trade Leary for a 6 rounder this year? We can have him as a valuable backup this year then get a 6th as a comp pick next year. I heard that on some podcast and it makes perfect sense.

Because there is no guarantee you will get a comp pick. Do you want the team to sit out free agency just so they don't miss out on that 6th round pick. If you have a viable replacement and backup, make the trade if you can get good value.

I see no connection between Leary's situation and Chaz Green.

This team needs Green to emerge as a tackle, either the current swing tackle, or the starter at right tackle. Doug Free is approaching a point where they either reduce his salary or release him. He's closer to the end of his career than the beginning and it's in this team's best interests to have his eventual replacement in place.

I wouldn't hold my breath on getting a conditional 6th from Leary. If he stays here as the backup, it'll be almost two full years since he started. Sure, teams will know that Collins was simply better, and the tape shows Leary was good in his own right.

However, not playing for two years and that possibly degenerative knee issue may force Leary to sign a 1-2 year prove it deal, which has no guarantee that we'll get a pick from his departure.

Sure, if Collins goes down we'll have a luxury of Leary starting, but only if Collins goes down. It seems the coaching staff only sees him as a LG. He'll be inactive on game days more than likely.

I guess there are no guarantees in life. Of course if you get "good value" you trade. The example I used was for a 6th round pick.

We won't get a comp for Leary as he was undrafted. Sorry ... no comp picks for Leary. We either move him now for a pick or lose him next year for nothing.

There is no guarantee of a comp if he goes elsewhere. Comps are awarded based on your net signings and losses.

A trade yields an automatic pick. Not the same as maybe getting a comp.

That said, a 6th is a pretty low value pick. Often a guy you like in the 6th ends up a UDFA. I'd not budge unless it's a 4th or a contributing player

Not accurate. Parnell was also undrafted and Dallas received a quality compensatory pick when he signed with Jacksonville.

This is one of those issues, like when you can go on PUP, that people will get wrong so long as this board exists.

I think the team and most people would rather have the good depth this year than a future 6th. Hold on to him until you know Looney can replace him and some other OL is a viable backup. Then wait for any injury and get a 4th or a solid young player.

But you also get his 2.5m salary cap space...that is starter money just like DMC and his 2.1m
