One Rolando McClain issue could be the media

T.O. was a different situation. The sports media loves the Eagles and loved McNabb. They hate the Cowboys, Jerry Jones and were turning on Parcells for being Cowboys-ized. T.O. spurned the Eagles and it drew tremendous ratings for them.
Now, he was going to Dallas…a major rival to the Eagles and a ratings juggernaut w/o T.O. So now you had T.O coming to Dallas for the ‘evil’ Jerry Jones and the narrative that ‘Parcells didn’t want him but was forced to take him’ and another story of ‘how long will Parcells take of Jerry controlling him?’

Personally, I believe most of it was nonsense from the media. But, that was the multitude of stories that the media could pull from with T.O. coming here (not to mention T.O.’s bad past with QB’s) and the public would buy into.

When Roy Williams (WR) came here, it was about his poor attitude and that the Cowboys traded some hefty picks to get him. And how Roy thought he was better than he actually was. Lesser stories = less media scrutiny.

With Dez it has been his ‘checkered past’ (although I would not personally label it ‘checkered’) and the media has tried to perceive Dez as a shiftless thug that is just going to blow up in Dallas’ face. They know that Dez isn’t media savvy and is an emotional player on the field, so they prey upon that in hopes of drawing people to that. In many ways, I think the Jeff Ireland incident has helped Dez because people can sympathize with Dez being treated that way and they think that the media treatment of him is no different than how Ireland treated Dez.

McClain will have it easier for the short-term. First, he isn’t going to cost much. We basically swapped 6th and 7th rounders…and that is if he makes the team. That is far different from T.O., Roy and Dez. T.O. wasn’t a huge cap killer, but was paid good money. Roy we spent a ton on and even Dez was a 1st round pick.

The MLB position isn’t nearly as glamourous as WR. And McClain has not even established himself as an impact player on the team. T.O., Roy and Dez were all immediate starters that were expected to contribute to the team.

The only story the media has with McClain is if he becomes the starter. They can possibly go with the ‘he shouldn’t be the starter, but Jerry is forcing the coaches to start him.’ Or the ‘he’s a starter, but he’s a locker room cancer.’

For now, the media will just stick with the old standby’s ‘Jerry is evil’, ‘Romo is a choker’, ‘Why does Garrett get so many chances?’

Not the most creative industry that you will come across.

I'm quite confident this trade is getting much more emphasis amongst the Cowboys' faithful than it is by those outside of that circle. The national media has merely seen fit to snicker about the fact that we're desperately taking a chance on someone who has twice subtracted himself from his NFL membership.

If Rolando McClain surprises everyone, possibly including himself, the NFL world will likely say we simply got lucky with that deal and afford little credit to those who saw its positive possibilities from the outset. Here in the Cowboys' dominion, we'll probably just smile and be glad we got lucky for a change.

Im more concerned with his ability to just make the team at this point, I will be concerned with the media later. Ive been trying to find any recent pics of Rolando but havent found any that could show us what kind of physical shape he is in currently.
Anyone have any they could share?

I guess that you're looking for pics with his shirt off.

It was reported that since not showing well for a conditioning test in April, that he was been working hard to get into shape. The report indicated that he was down near his college weight. I don't think he ever played at his college weight since coming to the NFL.

...the media.

Remember T.O. Granted, T.O. did bring a lot of the scrutiny on himself..but not nearly as much as the media actually gave him. Right now, beyond the obvious concerns about his mental and physical state I am truly concerned how the local and national (namely ESPN) media is going to react, overreact and/or misconstrue his actions. Can you imagine? He has to be on his absolute best behavior or he and Dallas alike will get destroyed. Him for whatever he does that can be made headline worthy and Dallas for not releasing him for something stupid or trivial.

Thoughts?

Maybe or maybe not.

The media as a whole is only going to jump on stories that the average Joe fan will get worked up about. The Cowboys don't have a big investment in him like Dez (1st round pick) or TO (big contract) and he didn't kill anybody (Josh Brent).

My guess is that the national media won't notice.

As far as the local media, I'm not sure if there are many Cowboys "haters" around anymore. The radio station The Fan in Dallas has become very popular and it is the Flagship station of the Cowboys. Radio guys like Galloway that liked to get people worked up are gone. About the only local media guy that has an axe to grind with the Cowboys anymore is Dale Hanson and with people getting their new from the internet these days, I'm not sure if anybody really watches the local TV sports broadcasters anymore.

Good points above. But still, Rolando is one shouting match on the sideline away from being villainized, if you ask me. He may have to make the final 53 before it becomes newsworthy; but there is still a part of me that thinks that the local media, at least, will be making a point to watch him like a hawk during training camp and preseason.

Just curious, do you have link to this report of him being down to his college weight?

I would have to search for it. Even with the link, I don't know is the report was accurate. We won't know for certain until TC.

This is a good post to have before training camp for a variety of reasons. I do think that if McClain is average the first few weeks that the media will die down some. If he's just not up to par, he will be cut and the media will die down. If he is playing lights out (seriously doubt this) the media will be on him and Dallas like white on rice. Essentially, this is a free look at a player that hasn't shown anything at the professional level in my opinion.

The question for me is can he play well enough to get back into football shape, make the roster, get his life under control and then come back next year and really show why he was a first round draft pick. Either way it works out, I wish the young man the best. The more I learn about his past and how he grew up, I marvel at him trying to admit his faults and taking the blame for his mistakes. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I honestly think the coaches are going to be patient with a player with his upside who hasn't played since November 2012. There won't really be any rush to cut him until they have to start releasing players in preseason. Remember Will Allen from last year? He lasted 5 games into the season after failing his physical early on in training camp, never met expectations and lost his starting job to Wilcox 2 games in.

At this point, McClain isn't even important enough for the media to care.

He'd have to start and play well for a while and then blow up before anyone would even notice him.

I hope your right, but I doubt it. Like I said before, he is going to be a guy they will have eyes on at all times if possible, regardless of how he actually plays.

All the evidence you need is to look at the first page of the FanZone.

The media didn't force him to make any of the stupid mistakes . I don.'t care for the media at times, but they are not the bad guys . They way to avoid the media is not to do anything that they can report on. Many Cowboy fans think the media picks on Dallas, but Jerry has created the environment that keeps the team in the public eye:

If he does something stupid, then he brought it on himself. But the media has a tendency to create news at times.

I hope that the very first practice of Training Camp that he butts heads with Copeland and then pops the first person coming to the offensive player's aide...and in effect saying, 'there's the line, now cross it!'

McClain isn't a prime time player right now and he's on the wrong side of the ball to cause too much of a ripple in the Dallas Media scene no matter what he says to the reporters at Valley Ranch, nothing to worry about here....just a nice simple & smart signing.

They care because he imploded as a first round draft pick and now he's on the Cowboys roster. The media will go away in due time. He will either make the team and be useful or will be cut and forgotten by the Dallas media.

Jerry has craved media attention for him and the team. Fans may not like it, but Jerry has asked for the attention and he believes any publicity is good. The players, coaches and fans pay for it.
