One thing I hate about soccer (about Cowboys stadium)

There's no standard length and width to the pitch. Narrow fields make the game way less fun.

For domestic matches:

Length (touch line): minimum 90 m (100 yds) maximum 120 m (130 yds)
Width (goal line): minimum 45 m (50 yds) maximum 90 m (100 yds)

For international matches;

Length: minimum 100 m (110 yds) maximum 110 m (120 yds)
Width: minimum 64 m (70 yds) maximum 75 m (80 yds)
Here's a pic of the Cowboys stadium about to host the Gold Cup quarterfinal:

http://www.3rddegree.net/2009/07/cowboys-stadium-to-small-for-world-cup/ :

Penality box = 44 yards.
Mark on end line = 10 yards from the corner arch.
Corner arch = 1 yard
And here’s the key measurement….
Gap between 10 yard mark and box = 2 yards. Maybe, and that’s being generous.
Box+10 yard mark(2)+corner arch(2)+gap(2)=44+20+2+4= 70 yards.
According to the FIFA rulebook the the minimum width for international matches is 70 yards.
So if you buy that space is two yards, and I’m not sure I do, then Cowboys stadium barley meet’s the internatinal measurement for width.
The field looks like it BARELY meets the requirement. There's like no space near the corners. Hopefully something can be done later on to the lower area to create more space otherwise the Cowboys Stadium probably won't be hosting a world cup.

Everything I hate about soccer can be summed up in one word.

Soccer.

I don't hate soccer, but hate a lot of the fans. They endlessly measure each stadium to see if it's "fit" for them, not realizing there are other sports out there, and that FIFA has very few actual requirements vs recommendations. Nevermind the lines are painted on that field. The field is about 6 yards too narrow as its layed down, which could be met by simply closing two of the corner field sweets and extending the tray. FIFA officials are there to consult the next two weekends and will tell them what needs to be done.

Anyways, I was onboard with the World Cup, but since the stadium has been completed, I like it to go elsewhere. Nothing but American soccer fans constantly saying why the stadium doesn't work for them. Why don't you throw the Cotton Bowl onto the bid and see what happens.

pitch looks fine, not a great amount of room at the corners but i've seen tighter in stadiums built for the sport. at the end of the day the stadium is built for american football not proper ;) football.

regarding the varying pitch sizes there is a minimum and maximum width and length which have to be adhered to. the main example i can think of regarding teams using this to their advantage was a few years ago when celtic played a fairly expansive game using the flanks while rangers tended to play a tight compact game through the middle the rangers manager actually had the groundsmen narrow their pitch to the smallest allowed to try and gain an advantage in old firm games.

i just wish there was a set requirement.

There are different standards for gold cup, domestic matches, and world cup. For future construction, there needs to be one set standard and maybe some leeway for the old grounds.

Gold cup is tomorrow night with Mexico in Dallas. USA plays tonight in philly.

Chelsea - Club America in Dallas is next week.

There is a set standard of 105m x 68m(~74 yards) for international "finals", meaning that the stadium cannot host a FIFA sanctioned tournament final until the corners are addressed. The stadium is about 6 yards too narrow to host a final. Reliant took out the first few rows in the corners and made them retractable to fit. Jerry obviously has suites in the corners, so he may have to close them to address a wider field if he wants to host a final. Otherwise, the stadium is larger than the minimum so it can host any other game.

FIFA observers are at the games the next two weeks, and Jerry says he will do whatever they say is necessary. We'll see.

Are any of these games on tv?

Look on your cable box and see if you have the Fox Soccer Channel.

Its usually hidden along with some other channels like ESPN news and such.

USA wins again.

Good game tonight but we should've blown them out.

LOL at the guy picking up the ball and running with it. What a horrible job officiating.

nice to see Dallas native, Kenny Cooper, score the winning goal.

Of course, couple minutes later, he skies an open shot when Brian Ching was wide open as well :laugh2:

i have bigger problems with poor artificial surfaces (i.e., costa rica, giants stadium) than I do with the changing field dimensions.

soccer haters don't know what they're missing.

i agree with that too. I hate the fieldturf for soccer since the ball bounces more and it's tougher to control. not to mention supposedly it's more harmful to the players.

Yesterday, for Chelsea vs Seattle, they paid 100k to install a grass field at Qwest Field. Then after Barcelona vs Seattle, they're donating that grass to a local high school then paying a bunch of money to install the Fieldturf back for the Seahawks season.
