One...Two...Three

I think right now with all the runningbacks we have they could equal an emmitt smith....dez bryant could end up being a michael irvin....tony romo another troy aikman...definitely a stretch,,,that is where we are lacking long term...

Awesome post Hos.

But I don't understand why we used a 1st rounder in the supplemental draft on Walsh just one year after drafting Aikman... what was the reasoning behind that?
It was the same year that we drafted Aikman. Jimmy wanted him as insurance. He was familiar with him, and in truth I don't think Jimmy expected us to lose 15 games.

Very well done. Excellent

Anyone have any old draft stories going the other way? Like we almost were even sicker but just missed on someone?

By the way, the next time I would have the we just drafted someone special feeling was April 22nd, 2010.

We all love Sam Young but lets slow down

Aikman wasn't all that the first year although you can look back and see the greatness. I thought it was a wasted pick but Jimmy was enamored with Miami players.

We didnt, they were drafted the same year. Teams forfeit draft picks for the supp draft the following year, which was 1990 for us.

Jimmy's reasoning behind it was that QB was by far the most important position and that you could 1) not pass a chance to get a franchise QB and 2) if you didnt know for sure that you had one, you needed to have a backup plan

If you listen to his comments he said he knew he'd be able to trade one of them all along, and that after the initial training camp he knew Aikman was the better player. It was pretty obvious to everyone.

Walsh was traded to the Saints in 1990 for three draft picks (IIRC a 1st, 2nd and 3rd). Contrary to the comments of some, there was never any "QB controversy". The only reason Walsh played in 1989 was because Aikman got hurt. Once Aikman was healthy he returned to the starting lineup.

Thanks for the responses. At least they got a good return on Walsh so missing out on the #1 overall pick wasn't all that bad.

You'd never see that strategy today with the guaranteed money these draft picks are getting.

Considering what he had around him, you really cant say much about his performance. He did have a couple of really impressive games though, including a 4TD game vs the then LA Rams (who made it to the NFC Champ game that yr) in a game we nearly won, he also set the then (not sure if its still a record) rookie record for most passing yds in a game at Phoenix.

That said, they didnt draft Walsh in response to anything Aikman did or didnt do. They were both drafted in 1989.

If I remember right, and it has been a long time, three teams made 1st round bids on Walsh. Since we were ahead of them in the Draft order (we had the #1 overall pick after 3-13 in 1988) he was awarded to Dallas. So we would not have gotten Walsh with a 2nd round offer.

We ended up getting 3 Draft picks for Walsh from the Saints.

I thought he came in the same year as Aikman?

I wonder how many of us had our lives literally affected by these guys. Take a look at our screen names and evidence is a plenty. I for one chose 22 for my number in ALL sports as the final piece of the triplets came on board.

I always figured it was Cortez Kennedy that Jimmy would have taken if they had the top pick, but I've read that Jimmy said that he always loved Junior Seau and that he would have been the pick.

I would have loved that.

:banghead:

dbair said we received a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Walsh... anyone know what those draft picks ended up being?

Walsh was simply a huge miscalculation by Jimmy and proof that he didn't get everything right. We got incredibly lucky that the stupid Saints bailed us out.

Congrats to Emmit. Clearly, if not the greatest, the toughest RB of all time who made a fantastic speech tonight.

Congrats to him and the Cowboys organization. Very well deserved first ballot HOFer

I heard the very same thing straight from Jimmy's mouth. But who knows how memories change over the years. I recall Jimmy talking very fondly about Tez before he took Walsh in the supplemental draft.

And kudos on the OP Hos, great great stuff!
