It was the same year that we drafted Aikman. Jimmy wanted him as insurance. He was familiar with him, and in truth I don't think Jimmy expected us to lose 15 games.JBell523;3485112 said:Awesome post Hos.
But I don't understand why we used a 1st rounder in the supplemental draft on Walsh just one year after drafting Aikman... what was the reasoning behind that?

Thanks for the responses. At least they got a good return on Walsh so missing out on the #1 overall pick wasn't all that bad.dbair1967;3485154 said:We didnt, they were drafted the same year. Teams forfeit draft picks for the supp draft the following year, which was 1990 for us.
Jimmy's reasoning behind it was that QB was by far the most important position and that you could 1) not pass a chance to get a franchise QB and 2) if you didnt know for sure that you had one, you needed to have a backup plan
If you listen to his comments he said he knew he'd be able to trade one of them all along, and that after the initial training camp he knew Aikman was the better player. It was pretty obvious to everyone.
Walsh was traded to the Saints in 1990 for three draft picks (IIRC a 1st, 2nd and 3rd). Contrary to the comments of some, there was never any "QB controversy". The only reason Walsh played in 1989 was because Aikman got hurt. Once Aikman was healthy he returned to the starting lineup.

I would have loved that.speedkilz88;3485404 said:I always figured it was Cortez Kennedy that Jimmy would have taken if they had the top pick, but I've read that Jimmy said that he always loved Junior Seau and that he would have been the pick.

Thank you SHF. Congrats on finally having a Hog in there.SkinsHokieFan;3485864 said:Congrats to Emmit. Clearly, if not the greatest, the toughest RB of all time who made a fantastic speech tonight.
Congrats to him and the Cowboys organization. Very well deserved first ballot HOFer
