Only 2 blitzes so far in Pre-season

For anyone worried about sack totals and "pressure" on enemy QB during pre-season so far, Parcells mentioned that they were keeping cards pretty close first 3 games. He said they have only blitzed a total of 2 times in first 3 games. All Vanilla so far. I'd be interested to see how our blitzes work out this year. The talent combined with experience is better now than it has been in a long while, but I still would like an improvement in the success of our blitzes, and not just sack totals, but more so plain pressure. I admit to having been a pretty big critic of Zimmer's blitz schemes over last couple years. I hope they let the dogs loose a bit more this year, especially putting Roy on the line more.

that was the number Parcells gave...but remember; Parcells does not consider rushing Ware or Ellis to be blitzes...they are just normal pass rushes.

2 .

That's about how many the Skins have been running coming out of the tunnel.

To no avail.

If it's true that we've only blitzed a non-OLB twice, then I think that we got sacks on both occasions. In the 49ers game, you can clearly see that Carpenter blitzes on the play where Burnett gets a sack, and he also blitzes when Hatcher get's his first sack.

In both instances, the defense apears to be in the nickel package with Carpenter playing the "Trotter" position, essentially standing over the center, while Burnett covers the middle of the field. In each case, there were only five players rushing the QB, 4 DL and 1 LB.

You and me both, LarryCanadian! It is downright disgusting how many times all our guys are stopped by just bunching them up together in the middle. It seemed at times like they were just running right into the backs of our own DL and getting themselves blocked out of the play. We had really pathetic blitz schemes.

Hopefully it will be much better this year and our blitzers will be able to find lanes to the QB to force the pressure.

We blitzed more than 2 times in the San Francisco game alone.

I thought that Zimmer's blitz packages were well thought out, we just didn't have the personell to execute them very well. Creating pressure is more important than neccessarily getting sacks. If you blitz from the outside without collapsing the pocket, then the QB is going to be able to escape. However, if you overload the middle, and can push the pocket into the QB, while the ends have outside containment, then the QB will have all sorts of problems getting a clean pass off.

The problem was that Nyguen, Coakley, and Singleton weren't really the type of players who could get any sort of signicant push.

I think it will be interesting to see how many times we send 8 and 9 rushers this year with our super-sized personell and our two terrific corners.

It really was amazing how often we would send 6 or 7 guys, and all of them would just get stonewalled on that initial surge. Alot of people blame Zimmer, but I've always found it hard to believe that he was instructing them to hit the same gaps at the same times. So, we were left staring at a wall of our defenders, not getting anywhere near the QB, as they completed one downfield. I agree, we've got the horses to make it happen now.

Wow, only 2 blitzes all preseason, and we still have 9 sacks in 3 games...

Heck, the Skins have blitzed on every other down, and only have 7 sacks... LOL...

Hmmm, who to believe, you, or Parcells. Tough choice. Let me sleep on it.
