Only Jerry Jones could do this. And our fans will eat it up

Give this coaching staff Brady and Charles Haley and Peterson and peak Purple Drank and it won't matter.

Only the Dallas Cowboys could look at a defense with TWO sacks in three games and decide the missing piece was a cornerback.

Not a pass rusher.

Not someone who can collapse the pocket.

Not someone capable of making a quarterback feel even mildly inconvenienced.

A cornerback.

The Cowboys have zero sacks over the last two games. Opposing quarterbacks have enough time in the pocket to make a sandwich, check their email, update their fantasy lineup and then wait for somebody to come open.

So Jerry Jones looked at that mess and said, “You know what would fix this? Let’s trade a future second-round pick for Joey Porter Jr.”

Brilliant.

That’s like watching your house burn down and ordering a new doorbell.

Porter is at his best when he can get physical and play press-man coverage. Dallas plays a zone-heavy system roughly 70 percent of the time.

So naturally, the Cowboys traded premium draft capital for a corner whose best skill doesn’t match the defense they currently run.

Either change the scheme or explain what the hell the plan is.

Because right now, the plan appears to be asking Porter to cover receivers for nine seconds while the defensive line politely waits for the quarterback to finish reading the entire field.

And it gets better.

Porter hasn’t played a single game this season because of a back injury. He is in the final year of his rookie contract and reportedly wants more than $30 million per season.

Dallas gave up a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick for the privilege of inheriting the injury, the contract dispute and the questionable scheme fit.

Oh, and Porter has committed 38 penalties in three seasons.

That part actually makes perfect sense.

Dallas led the NFL with 133 accepted penalties last season, so at least they found someone who already understands the culture.

Welcome to the Cowboys, Joey. Your jersey, locker and weekly holding penalty are ready.

To be clear, Porter is a talented player. He could absolutely improve this secondary.

But cornerback was not the fire currently burning down the building.

The fire is a pass rush with two sacks in three games and none since Week 1. The fire is opposing quarterbacks standing comfortably in the pocket until someone eventually gets open. The fire is a defense that cannot finish a pressure, end a drive or get off the field when it matters.

A great corner can help a pass rush by making the quarterback hold the ball longer.

But eventually, somebody still has to sack him.

Dallas apparently forgot that part.

This is what the Cowboys always do. They make the loud move instead of the logical move. Jerry gets a recognizable name, the media gets a week of content and fans are expected to pretend the defense has been fixed.

Meanwhile, the pass rush still couldn’t get home if you gave it a GPS and paid for the tolls.

Only the Dallas Cowboys could have no pass rush, run a zone-heavy defense and solve both problems by trading a premium pick for an injured press-man corner who needs a massive new contract.

Jerry Jones isn’t building a defense.

He’s collecting names.
This is the kind of move you make when you are one player away from being a sb contender.
When you have the 31st ranked defense it makes no football sense whatsoever.
Are we trying to lead the nfl in players with the highest salary per position?
If we sign GP and Porter this upcoming offseason we have a shot.
And fans wonder why no nfccg in 30 years.
Our front office thinks they are playing fantasy football

Whats up bro

Just watching the cowboys, hoping we can actually get over the hump, with all this talent we have. We have the best talent on paper, but still can’t get out of our own way.

I use to get mad, I just shake my head. Waiting for the Dak era to be over and maybe we can start fresh.

I really don’t know what will help
A professional GM would be a good start!

No offense to the four NFC East franchises, but it’s not a comparatively tough division. Some team will be left in first place after week 18. Cowboys are as likely as the Commanders, Eagles, or Giants to be that team.

Not a lot of pride in that, I guess, but it’s still “making” the playoffs.
I do think we can make the playoffs but only because the division is so bad. I don't think for a minute we're a SB contender though.

You still crying, brother?

SMDH

If they could get Crosby for a 6th and a 2nd in two different drafts....I am sure they would have picked him over Porter JR.

Actually they were very interested in him but did not want to give up the picks to get him as I am sure it would be more than those two picks.

The were also interested in some LBs early on but the two they wanted decided to go elsewhere. They also talked about trading for LB from the Dolphins but they did not want to pay the price in draft picks that the Dolphins wanted.

Now add into the idea that they picked up Durant, Thompson and Lock in the off season and now all three are injured. Looks like Revel is injured. Hooker is coming off an injury and Bell is not someone who can be counted for in the passing game.

I am sure most Cowboys fans would rather we got Crosby from the Raiders or Brookes from the Dolphins. But they could not work out a deal.

So Porter it is.

They made an outstanding trade. They just got better and they can still make other moves. Joey Porter is an outstanding corner. He is one of the best in the league.

They also can still make another trade.

OP, have you seen the injury report? The entire secondary is on the training table, Jerry had no choice here. It was either a CB or Home Depot guy.

:lmao:

Fans screamed for CB help all off season. Even after the addressed the issue.
Injuries happened.
They go get a very good CB.
And the same fans complain thy got a CB.

Yes need pass rush help as well. That too could happen. Or they finally get more comfortable with the scheme, and communication improves.
The complainers are crazy.

We're all watching the same team, but these panic-stricken posts obviously designed to incite & rally the "nattering nabobs of negativism" are becoming...well...tiresome. (With all due respect, of course.)

The Cowboys were in desperate need of secondary help. As in "this weekend." And they went and got it. Boom! Trading a 2028 2nd-round pick is like worrying about the price of frozen orange juice concentrate futures two years hence. We'll worry about getting back into that round - if it makes any sense to do so - between today and 18 months from now...

Our designated pash rushers probably don't lack athletic ability as much as they require a bit of time and training within a program that's had four DCs in the past five years.

(And pssst: Porter isn't injured.)

Just enjoy the game against the Texans on Sunday, and we'll see what happens.
