The words that you use do define you, .. although that is not important to most people, it is part of what defines you.

I am pretty sure Tom Landry did not use those words, nor Tim Tebow. They are defined in that way.

I am sure there are others on every team and coaching staff.

LOL, ... not sure why you think a kicker would not use that kind of language.

I'm sure the heavily religious coaches and players in the NFL like the two you mentioned (have) rarely used that language, but the rest of the NFL is not so uptight. I didn't say kickers didn't use profanity. I mentioned kickers because they are rarely in a position to use it around teammates. Maybe after a missed kick, but at that point, most of their teammates have already walked away from them so it's pointless except to themselves. I'm sure there may be exceptions, but as I said, it's kickers so it's not like they're a voice in the locker room.

It's not because they are uptight, .. it's a choice. It's a conscious decision not to use that language. It means something to them.

LOL, ... you're right, nobody cares what the kicker says, especially after a miss. :)

I grew up hearing those words from coaches and teammates, The coaches I played for demanded a lot and were not out there baby sitting. I guess some may get offended to me it is no big deal.

I like the fact Witten is taking a no non-sense approach.

Witten has been caught several times using profanity even on live TV. I think you will be hard-pressed to find a non-kicker football player who doesn't at times. His language is not what defines him. It's his professionalism and dedication that defines him on the field and his charity work and participation with non-football activities that defines him off the field.

I agree. He seems to be a good honest man but he is here to do a job and wants to push others to win. Him using 4 letter words by no means defines Jason Witten

I admire men that choose not to use those words. They stand out to me.
The Tony Dungy's, Tom Landry's, Roger Staubach, Herschel Walker, ... I don't think I have heard Romo use those words.

We are all, in some way definded by the language that we use, or don't use.
It does not define the player that they are, or the teammate, .. nor the husband or father, .. but a man either does use those words or he does not.

I also admire men that can speak without using .. uh, uh, umm, like a, you know, etc.

I am not offended by that language, but it does define a part of that person for me.

Cussing and football goes hand and hand, l don't understand the fascination of the media when a player or a coach lets loose a few choice words at practice.

The funny thing is that you will rarely ever hear profanity from me. In fact, most of my friends have never heard one word from me. I am just not easily offended by those who do use profanity (and some of my friends use them regularly) and as many sports and games that I have played in my life, I know that that use of profanity by athletes is more the norm than not.

as you said, it's a choice for me. I just don't expect everyone else to live by my choice.

Profanity is typically a window into a lack of vocabulary and communications skills.

But when you hit that pinky toe on the coffee table in the middle of the night.......

It's 2013.. These "so called" bad words is getting ridiculous. We let so much go yet, The F-word is still taboo.

I'm sorry but standing in a huddle hearing some guy saying Golly gee fellows we really need to pay attention does not grab the attention from teammates the same way “Shut the ---- up!” does.
As Jason said “Hey, look. It’s time to compete, it’s time to go,” Witten said. “Wasn’t anything personal. Just excited to be out there playing.”

Witten is communicating the way teammates comprehend.

Tom did not have to, he had guys like Reeves, Ditka and Stuatner on his staff that would.

Tom did not want to. It's not like he wanted to but let others do it so he wouldn't look bad.

Surely you know Tom never would. I would not be surprised to learn that he discouraged his players and coaches from using that language

Maybe he didn't, but he may have.

I do with all of my teams and coaches, .. but I'm coaching youth.

Hey erod, .. When I was playing football in H.S., over the entrance/exit from our field house to our practice field there was a big sign that read:

PROFANITY SHOWS LACK OF VOCABULARY

Tom didn't at least not that I ever saw and that is fine it was not him but others who do, do not make them less of a person. Using words like that do not make you more or less of a person. These are not molded people or fake. If you don't use those words great but it does not make you a better person nor does it define you. As for him telling his players not to use those words NO I don't think he ever told them what words you could use. Hell reading Walt Garrison book I'm very sure Landry did not tell them not to cuss.
