So if we cut Berny, who is the back up center?

I don't see Bern getting cut. The other backup center is an undrafted rookie.

I think the backup backup Center might be Martin. He might even be the gameday backup option. If Collins and Leary compete for the LG spot, the one that is not the starter would be inactive if Bern is active.

I'm going to guess that if the injury to center is for any extended time..

Martin might be moved there and Collins moves to RT and Free goes to RG.

I think C is so important to the run and pass game..you have to put your next best guy there.

That's Martin hands down as you don't move Smith.

And Romo has to have a mauler in front of him to keep the middle of the defense from destroying the passing game.

The rookies on the OL move up all around.

If Bernadeau is still here..surely he becomes a swing guy playing G and OT.

Somewhere last year I seem to remember Martin played some C when they were moving him around the OL
It is highly unlikely that Free would be a Guard. It is much more likely that Collins would play Guard than Free.

Bern will not be the backup OT. That will be one of Weems, Collins, Green or Martin.

Normally..

I'd probably agree with you about Free and Collins..

except I think Free has injury issues at RT and they would put the younger Collins there and let him get his experience.

Letting Free see how he would last at G next to Martin at center.

The question posed was who backs up center.

And as I recall Free started at LG when he came into the NFL under Parcells.

So G is something he can do.

Maybe not his best position..but possibly.

We all know the OL is going to be carrying a big load this year and injuries are going to happen.

We'll see.

Callahan being in Washington is going to have an effect on the OL, too.

How much is unclear right now.

I think many are downplaying his departure but I think it may not be pretty early on until things jell with the new running game and players settle.

Free was at LT not LG, and there are two possibilities for back up center, McDermott and Bernadeau backing up guard and center or the loser of Leary and Collins at LG as back up guard with Martin moving to center.

Training camp will make the selection process for this roster much easier, whether it be thru injury or poor performance it will take it's toll on these players. It's one of the reasons training camps exists, granted todays cup cake camps don't compare to the days in Wichita Falls when we were molding champions. The hype that the OP would have you believe is not the reality of this years roster selection. It's a process so let it happen and it will take care of itself. BTW, I'm praying Sean Lee is not one of those casualties to injury. We need that dude!

Parcells last year was 2006. Free was drafted in 2007. The only time Free was ever at Guard was for about 1 quarter in a preseason game. His weakness is lack of upper body strength. He overcomes it with well above average foot quickness for his size. That would be a bigger problem at Guard. It is the opposite with Collins. He is very powerful but has limited quickness in terms of playing OT. Playing Guard would magnify is best asset which is power.

Frank Pollack, the OL coach is in his 3rd year with the Cowboys. He was the primary OL coach in 2013 when Callahan was calling plays according to an interview I saw with Frederick. I would be concerned if they were bringing in a new coach from outside the organization, but that is not the case. They have 3 All Pros plus a 9 year veteran in Free. It should not be too difficult to coach them. Collins and Weems are probably the guys that will get most of his attention in TC. Weems seemed to be in the lead for backup OT job coming out of the OTAs.

Bold - Makes the 53 man roster for game 1.

Vaughan as the #2 QB is what I prefer, but is probably not a high probability.

There will likely be some injuries before Hardy and R. McClain return. If not, then a DL and LB would need to be cut at that time.

Dunbar could be considered as a 5th/6th WR instead of RB. I'm basing that on comments Garrett made during OTAs. He could be the KR and has practiced PR. I'm considering Lucky Whitehead as the returner for now.

It's too early to worry about the practice squad.

My guess is: Swaim,Bishop,Gardner,Russell makes the cut.
Without consideration of cap: Coleman,Berny do not. My guess looking at your names.
Then there is the stand by TC injury disclaimer

Berny not going to be cut as our primary backup center and general interior position flex.

He was an underrated signing.

That certainly could be right my guess its a long shoot.
But they have moved some real beef in the off season
so we'll see.

I think the goal would be to move as few guys as possible.........No way they move, mix and match 3 guys--would destroy the cohesion of the OLine for too long.

I expect at least 9-10 picks in the 7th round next year.

Git-R-Done!

Damn! I forgot all about those picks next year! I hope the Cowboys lose all their games this year. lol By the way this team is getting built, there are some nice players/options that the Cowboys will be able to use.

Every year people want free to play guard
If free is playing guard means we had lots of guys injured on the oline
Free is not a guard and is not near physical enough to be one to me

yeah you move the minimal number at all times. Bernie is pretty strong so he would be OK at center as regards being the anchor.
