no rat/mice noise and it has been more than 2 months.
it appears the problem is at least temporarily over (knock on wood)

Still no rat noises in the house (knock on wood)

Did discover some acorns (poured outside in pic) stored in a pair of shoes in the garage.
Apparently a squirrel got into the garage.
However there were no eaten acorns in early March, so sounds like the critter did not get in again.

Well another few weeks, and no animal sounds at night in the walls. No strange acorns in the garage either.

well no noise for many months. however the unusual structure of the house lends itself to pests coming back some day. there is a 1 and 1/2 foot gap between outer wall and inner wall to fit the steel beams.
