Opinions... Is Witten a HOFer?

Playoffs and SB wins are usually reserved for judgement of QBs. Not many others are involved there.
Witten has made 4 Pro Bowls in 5 years. If he makes 8-9 straight pro bowls and keeps his production steady, he has a very good shot at the HOF.
If he can make 10 Pro Bowls then he will be in the HOF. No player has had 10 and NOT made it in. Now he also needs to make a few ALL PRO teams as well. And I think he will. If he can make 3-4 ALL PRO teams and 10 Pro Bowls then he will get in.

I think 10 Pro Bowls will get you in even if you make no All-Pro teams. Just because there is someone better than you at your position through your career doesn't mean you don't deserve HOF.

I remember watching a Madden documentary about him getting into the HoF. I think of his 3 superbowl winning teams, he was the only person to make it into the Hall of fame. If memory serves me right, and that is true, the requirements for that have to be a more than just performance team or individual.

I have to think that fan support, teammates support, player, coach, league approval, and betterment of the league all have to do with it too. There is probably also a huge bottleneck of players waiting to get in. Someone lets say Witten surely will not make it in his first eligible, he wont be a shoe in even with the best case scenario.

Madden won only one Super Bowl. And on that team (1976 Raiders) were Hall of Famers Fred Biletnikoff, Dave Casper, Willie Brown and Ted Hendricks.

Stole the thoughts out of my head.

Typically, I'm the kind of "show-me" fan that wants more than stats from my great players (one reason why I despise Tracy McGrady).

But tight ends aren't judged by their Super Bowl rings. I mean, is Tony Gonzalez any less a shoe-in for the Hall if he never makes it to the playoffs again? It's not like he has had a blistering impact in the postseason so far.

Look no further than Jay Novacek. One of the most crucial pieces of three Super Bowl squads, a fairly decent statistical career, but probably will never get a sniff from the Hall. We all consider him (or, at least many of us) deserving of such honors, but we ultimately know the stats aren't there.

And that's just it. Tight end is largely a stats position when it comes to the Hall. If a stat-heavy tight end happens to have a Super Bowl ring or two, like Shannon Sharpe, it's just gravy.

At least his memory was only somewhat off. ;)

Just messin', hypnotoad.

Randall McDaniel. I never heard that he had THAT many Pro Bowls. BUT he was also a lineman, and they do tend to get ignored by the HOF. There are only a handfull of tackles and guards, and maybe one or two centers in the HOF from the last 40 years, and there have been a lot of great ones.

A show in? What exactly in your mind makes him a show in? He hasn't won a playoff game, nor come close to a Superbowl. I doubt he will put up Tony Gonzalez numbers, and hes a sure lock for the Hall of Fame, even though he hasn't won a playoff game either. But you can't say any of the Cheifs teams he was on were better than the Cowboys team we had last year.

I gotta rank Witten in the Top 5 tight ends playing right now, but putting him into the hall of fame is pushing the envelope for me.

But he is putting up Tony Gonzalez numbers.

Winslow has been in the league four seasons. He missed one season and played only part of his first season.

I believe his point was, look at what he's done in the 2 seasons he's played healthy.

Personally, I think I just won't worry about whether he gets in the hall of fame until he retires.....or at least until he's like 30. I mean seriously....

As of right now, is JAson Witten a Hall of Famer? I vote he is a show in.

If he continues playing at the level he has for a while longer then yes he is a shoe in.

Damned wikipedia confused me! I thought it was 1, but wikipedia made it seem 3. Thanks for the facts check.

Like I said, either he included Winslow's yardage from his first season, or he rounded up for Winslow but not for Witten.

Not yet. In a few more years, if he continues at the pace he is now, then quite possibly.

Way too early for any of this kind of discussion. Are we serious contender for the Super Bowl? That's really the question I am more interested in.
