Orlando matches Dallas' offer to Gortat
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - The Orlando Magic retained center Marcin Gortat on Monday as a result of matching the Dallas Mavericks' offer sheet signed by the restricted free agent last week.
The Magic had seven days to exercise its right of first refusal by matching the offer Gortat signed with Dallas on July 8, which the Orlando Sentinel reported to be a five-year, $34 million agreement
Gortat proved a solid backup to Dwight Howard at the center position in 2008-09, the seven-footer's first full season in the NBA.
"Having quality big men is an absolute must in our league, and Marcin (Gortat) has worked very hard to fit into that category," said Otis Smith, the club's general manager. "He provides tremendous depth to our frontcourt and we're happy to bring him back."
In 63 regular season games, the 25-year-old from Poland averaged 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in roughly 12 1/2 minutes per game. He also scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a series clinching win against Philadelphia with Howard serving a one-game suspension in the first round of the playoffs.
