I don't care about DTs and sacks. If he was stout against the run, I'd be all for signing him. To me, sacks are an edge rusher stat. Osa does not hold up against the run and these others guys do. Jalen Carter is a beast and nobody can run on Philly up the middle. Same with Ed Oliver. He doesn't get pushed around and makes running between the tackles very difficult for opposing offenses. Osa isn't that guy. I don't care about his average time to sack a QB if he rarely sacks the QB. Almost doesn't count in football.
I am not saying Osa was perfect but I just do not get this position.
The context was a DL rotation of Mazi Joseph Watkins Golston Parsons Lawson and Kneeland.
Parsons ran upfield most plays. Early in the season he used his elite speed and quickness and speed to make up the ground but as the season wore on so did he and his performance. He ended up out of a ton of plays because of scheme.
Golston who is much better at DE and played well when Kneeland got hurt was forced to backup 3T most games. He was not remotely as effective at 3 as Osa there.
Kneeland was great when they finally played him but he was injured a lot missing just shy of half the season.
Mazi was inconsistent within and from game to game. He would follow a good play with being washed, he would follow a relatively consistent game with a trainwreck. He still doesn't know how to use his hands/feet, the timing, or recognition much less counters. That was better than the year before.
Joseph and Watkins could not get off the ball and were alarmingly easy to stand up and turn. They are corpses collecting paychecks.
And I do not want to think about how awful Lawson was. We all remember those massive runs off tackle. I guess you were staring down Osa handfighting a guard while the edge was getting crushed 7 yards downfield.
We have not even started on the LB but in all of that you thought Osa was a problem?
