Browns | Savage explains why he upped offer to D. Anderson
Tue, 1 Apr 2008 21:22:54 -0700

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said he upped the team's contract offer to QB Derek Anderson because he was afraid the Dallas Cowboys would sign him and trade him to the Miami Dolphins. Savage was afraid Dallas would sign Anderson to a big contract that included a "poison pill." The Cowboys would have given the Browns their first-round pick, No. 28 overall, and their third-round pick as compensation for signing the restricted free agent. The Cowboys would then have traded Anderson and their other first-round pick, No. 22 overall, to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. As a result, the Browns raised their maximum offer from $22 million to $24 million when they signed him.

There is no way we would go after the number one pick. That would screw up our cap for 5 years.

what in the world? He really thought that? If that is true I expect jerrys head to explode on draft day.

Or maybe my head is going to explode on draft day.

How would that work? Would we offer him a contract with no signing bonus and ridiculous salaries that'd trigger if he played in Cleveland? That'd be the only way to prevent a cap penalty and Anderson wouldn't have signed that kind of offer sheet anyway.

I could really read into the logic of this but why would Jerry Jones put himself in that position to sign and trade another team's quarterback?

so we sign anderson to be big contract, and have the entire signing bonus accelerated to our cap this year when we trade him to miami?

i guess, if we can sign anderson to a contract with no signing bonus, then i can see that happening, but would he go for something like that?

That's gotta be a poor attempt at an April Fool's joke by KFFL, because that's the stupidest thing I've ever read.

That would have been a sneaky and shocking way of getting it done.

Jerry said people might be surprised at how the team got to where it wanted to be with players, that would have done it.

But signing away a high priced FA with a signing bonus would have wrecked our cap. In fact, we probably couldn't do it at all considering the acceleration after this trade to the fins.

To top it off, the whole deal supposedly fell through because the Browns upped the offer by a stinkin 2 mil.

Suuure.

C'mon folks. This was posted on Apr 1. It's an April Fools Joke.
