But signing away a high priced FA with a signing bonus would have wrecked our cap. In fact, we probably couldn't do it at all considering the acceleration after this trade to the fins.

To top it off, the whole deal supposedly fell through because the Browns upped the offer by a stinkin 2 mil.

Suuure.

C'mon folks. This was posted on Apr 1. It's an April Fools Joke.

I posted the link to the Cleveland Plain dealer...did you go there? It's a real story it appears

as for the cap, if he had signed a deal with post dated roster bonuses (instead of a true signing bonus) or loaded up with alot of guaranteed money, it would have had no impact on our cap...so it could have worked that way

sounds like their guy was a little paranoid, but it wasnt impossible

I heard Jerry tried to buy his way onto Dancing With The Stars so he could mingle with Jason Taylor and lure him into retirement so he could offer Greggo in a trade for the #1 pick.Unfortunately and ironically the driver of a U.P.S. truck on his way to the studio to deliver the video of jerry dancing in a commercial fell asleep at the wheel of his truck and crashed . When Jerry jerked the hat off the driver to take over his driver duties to get the film to the studio a man driving a built ford tuff truck threw out a can of pepsi max that hit jerry in the head and rendered him unconscious. It was decided by studio executives that since they had no proof of jerry's exceptional dance moves and shwervability they would have to move on without him.

My first thought was April Fools as well... But it makes some sense for one reason: I got the impression from listening to Parcells every Friday night on his show with Mort that he really liked Anderson a lot. And he does fit the Parcells prototype of being big, having a big arm, being able to play in bad weather, etc. Naturally this was discussed many times during the year, as Anderson's emergence was such a story.

Parcells couldn't give their 1st in a RFA tender because it's #1 overall. But at #28, we could.

I agree with you that the subject was at least broached by Bill Parcells if not Jerry himself.

Ask yourself... would Jerry trade 28 and the 3rd rounder for the #1 overall?

OF COURSE HE WOULD!!!
He could then trade down if he so desired at 50 cents on the dollar and still make out like a friggin bandit. (say Atlanta's pick and their 4th rounder so they go up and get Matt Ryan)

Now as to making it work well Jerry can make nearly anything work. The poison pill contract is basically commonplace nowadays and Derek Anderson could be playing in South Florida for a team that needs a QB making more money... why would he NOT sign the contract. Yea, the Dolphins suck but BP will not let them suck for long and John Beck would be a bit less threatening to my job security than Brady Quinn.

I do not for a second think this ever came close to happening but it would not at all shock me to learn it had been discussed.

So we would do the Fins a favor and get Anderson for our 1st and 3rd, sign him to some kind of shady deal with no signing bonus and then trade him and our #22 overall to Miami for the right to pick McFadden. C'mon, Savage is smoking some serious stuff. All this based on the fact Miami didn't answer his calls on the first day of free agency.

There is no chance that could have possibly be thought of. Mainly because not only did you give up the 28 spot and a third rounder, but you signed the guy with a bonus. If you then turned around traded him to Miami you just signed the guy and ate his entire bonus to move up to #1 and then turn around and pick a guy and give him a huge bonus.

If that guy honestly believed this was going to happen then he's an idiot and shouldn't be running a team.

Browns | Savage explains why he upped offer to D. Anderson
Tue, 1 Apr 2008 21:22:54 -0700

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said he upped the team's contract offer to QB Derek Anderson because he was afraid the Dallas Cowboys would sign him and trade him to the Miami Dolphins. Savage was afraid Dallas would sign Anderson to a big contract that included a "poison pill." The Cowboys would have given the Browns their first-round pick, No. 28 overall, and their third-round pick as compensation for signing the restricted free agent. The Cowboys would then have traded Anderson and their other first-round pick, No. 22 overall, to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. As a result, the Browns raised their maximum offer from $22 million to $24 million when they signed him.

Huh? Why wouldn't Dallas just trade their 22nd and 28th, with the 3rd, for any of the top five picks to get a guy like McFadden..

because bill valued the QB

It would be like using his draft pick for QB which is a smart move they need to rebuild
