my advice is skip the 768dpi and go for 1024dpi

Bing bing bing. Nobody should be buying anything less than 1024 now.

I got a Vizio not too long ago and we absolutely love it. I would suggest that you look into them.

I don't know, of course your feelings about it could be what I refer to as the "Ragu Effect". Referring to people who like Ragu spaghetti sauce have never actually tasted a good spaghetti sauce and therefore think Ragu is good. Basically it means you think it looks good, but thats because you haven't directly compared it to a really good HDTV.

...Then again, maybe I'm wrong about Vizio. Although, I don't know any home theater gurus who give them high marks either.

I'm taking that as an insult. I made a simple general statment and you insult me. I'm a designer, I live by what my eyes see. I'm into photography and videography. I work with HD video, green screen work etc. I study pixels. If it's someone who knows visuals, it would be me. I spot what other's don't see.

Now, I said my $199 tv was pretty good and I had no complaints. Would a 50" $4,000 tv be better? *drum rollllllllllllllll* Yes. I don't recall in my previous statement saying Vizio was the best tv out there...just that it wasn't awful or whatever. I bet you could find a good tv in every brand out there. And not every person who asks for tv advice can tell the difference either. Most dont even know what 480p, 720p, 1080p even means. Most people can't even tell that your hd feed isn't true hd, it's still being compressed for broadcast....that's why blue-ray movies look better than live tv....or that satellite is 720p so having a 1080p tv isnt really needed....or that alot of HD dvds are just upscaled from 480p so its not even real HD but with HD prices....

And wouldn't a person who has to ask advice on a tv be more likely a ragu eater than someone like me? Did you insult the original poster? Man, that ragu comment....you window licker. :banghead:

It was not intended to be an insult. I'm sorry you took it that way. The Ragu Effect IS very real, but like I said. I really didn't even look at Vizio and I've never heard anyone adept in the subject rave over Vizio.

My Wife is Italian and she makes all of her sauces homemade. Prior to meeting her, I thought that Ragu was tha Shiznits! Color me a Ragu Effectee! :laugh2:

Do NOT buy a Sharp unless price is a concern. The Sharp Aquos was once King of LCDs, but that time has long past. Sharps are now just another brand, im afraid. Ditto for LG. If I'm in the market for an LCD tv, I'm not looking at any other brands besides Sony and Samsung. I recently went through the HDTV search and ended up with a 40" Sony Z series. The Z is just below the XBR in the sony LCD lineup, and its been completely awesome. Stay away from the Sony L and S-series TVs, those are junk. V and Ws are nice for the money, Zs are fantastic and XBRs are the cream of the crop but carry a hefty price premium. Samsungs and sonys seem to consistently have the best panels..least amount of backlight bleed, deeper blacks, better colors, less banding than the others.

Lots of good info there. Thanks!

this post is dead on.

IMO, stay away from Vizio.

Sony or Samsung and you won't go wrong though stay away from Samsung's cheap models (ie: Walmart Samsung). My brother sells TVs for a living and we have 5 flat panels here in the house; all are Samsung and Sony. Trust me.

Well, there's a place for Vizios. If you are looking for cheap, they aren't bad. You can overlook the flaws for the price.

There's nothing wrong with Vizio's. I have a 37" LCD and 42" Plasma for 2 years each and have had no problem. People think because you buy them from Costco, Walmart, or some store like that that they aren't good TV's. Ridiculous.

In otherwords, if you're willing to eat Ragu, you might as well buy a Vizio! :lmao2:

Ragu is Ragu. If you put your Vizio next to my Samsung you would pipe down and accept being assimilated into the anti-Ragu regime! :laugh2:

No need to be offended. Vizios are what they are. A very good, budget panel. However, if you stack them up against pricier models from other manufacturers you will see real quick that they don't quite measure up. You'll see more manufacturing flaws on the vizios (build quality, backlight bleed) and notice they aren't as smooth or the colors aren't as rich, blacks not as deep. If I were on a budget or I just wanted a panel for use with a PC or something, Vizio would be near the top of my list. Otherwise, though, you should be looking elsewhere.

There's nothing wrong with buying a TV at Costco or Walmart or Target. Those stores carry a lot of good panels, too.

psssst.

Theres a group of people who don't care for the small difference in quality in exchange for the large difference in cost.

Thought you'd like to know.

Unless you're a video nut or one of those fools who falls for everything a Best Buy employee tells you, you don't need top of the line.

I mean, what are you doing on your TV that you need the thing to be that great?

Half the people I have met who have awesome TVs don't even have the thing calibrated right.

For me, Vizio is fine so quit pissing in my Ragu

It depends on what your "small difference in quality" is. Comparing budget panels like a vizio to my sony Z series, the blacks look washed out in dark scenes...that means a loss of detail. Also, colors not as rich. To me, that's a huge difference and one which I will pay several hundered more to eliminate.

I am a former budget HDTV believer. 4 years ago I wanted an HDTV but didnt want to pay out the nose (lcds were far more expensive back in 2005). So, i settled on a budget TV - a $600 (on sale) Viewsonic, which had received great reviews for such an affordable tv. It had maddening on-screen display menus, no codes for the remote so I was stuck having to use 2 different remotes, washed out darks (which I knew about going in), and a year after i bought it the transformer started buzzing so it was replaced with a brand-new one under warranty. A year later, the replacement started buzzing but by that time I was out of warranty. The buzzing came and went and finally went, and I kept it until this spring and gave it away to my little sister and her soon-to-be-husband for their house.

Minus the big annoyances, the TV wasn't all that bad. But it wasn't really great either. When you are talking about TVs, remember: you get what you pay for.

Actually "Ragu" brand is takes it's name from a real homemade Italian sauce that can take hours to prepare and tastes like Heaven. So technically, Vizio could be Ragu and Samsung could be Ragu.
