This data comes from
NFL Pro, which is the NFLs data arm that uses Next Gen stats so there’s actually good tech behind it, but it lacks a human element. They track microchips in shoulder pads and the ball. Here’s how they define a pressure.
- A Pressure: This is an umbrella term. A play is flagged as a pressure if a defender executes a sack, a QB hit, a hurry (getting within 1.5 yards), OR if the defender is within 2 yards of the quarterback at the exact split-second the ball leaves the passer's hand.
PFF
As to the more commonly cited PFF, it can’t be trusted. Cris Collinsworth, the principal owner, sold all of their tech to Teamworks and then fired almost all their employees.
PFF is now essentially a zombie shell company that pays Teamworks to feed that data into its AI managed website.
Teamworks didn’t hire any of rhe actual analysts and quality control people in the deal. They just have a bunch of entry level contractors working from home, churning out the grades as fast as possible.
Sports Information Systems (SIS)
If you want human graded film study with legit football people doing it, you want SIS
If you want scientific data collection, using tech like microchips in shoulder pads and the football, you want
Next Gen Stats (NFL Pro)
Both are much better than PFF
