So we can sign anyone who is cut no problem.

Theres some rumblings about Alan Faneca who is due a $9.5M bonus soon. Hes way older and would be a stop-gap but he is a fiery leader who knows every OL responsibilty.

Who else might be cut?

If released, he becomes a FA. If I understand right, we can't sign FA unless we actually lose one. That would block us from signing Faneca.

Anyhow, I doubt the Jets let him go. If anything, Rex Ryan knows how important the line of scrimmage is and Faneca was a huge part of their running game.

We have BIGG and Koiser, why would Faneca want to sign here? He is still easily starter material elsewhere.

We can sign anyone who is released to any amount.

Hed start over Kosier but I doubt we go that way.

If released that makes him a free agent. Why can we sign him if he is a free agent if the lack of a CBA says we cannot sign FAs?

Anybody who becomes a FA because he is cut, is available to any team including the Cowboys. The restrictions only apply to players who have played out their contracts.

As for signing him, no. We need to get younger along the O-line and Faneca doesn't fit the bill.

As you said he is older and it's my opinion we need to get much younger.

The rules only apply to UFA who have expiring contracts. Player that are cut for any reason are available to all teams.

Well, lets hope the Browns cut Joe Thomas or the Broncos cut Ryan Clady! :laugh2:

Not true, this has been debunked numerous times on here.

There are some fiscal caps on who we can sign if I remember correctly. I think we can sign one moderate priced FA assuming we don't lose someone to FA. We can more than one lower priced FAs. I forget the actual numbers.

We need to build thru the draft. You fill holes thru FA. We don't have any glaring holes assuming a ball hawking FS doesn't become available.

It's actually one big-money UFA -- anything above a certain amount, with no upper limit.

And as others have mentioned, anyone who is cut by another team won't count against our signing restrictions.

Don't you just see teams franchising players since they have 2 now? Plus they'll just tender the UFA's. This is really made for teams that draft well because the FA pool with be dry every single year.

Who do you think might be cut from other squads this off-season Adam?

The other aspect people are ignoring is there is now no lower limit on what you can spend on players' salaries. Some teams may choose to dump some salary - just take a look at baseball where there is no cap - many small market teams have very low payrolls.

I think in baseball, most of them get 3 years in the bigs before arbitration and 6 years before they get free agency.

But a different kind of free agent, pal... any team can sign any player that another team cuts...

Bingo! Look at a team like Cincinnati. They had Houshmanzadeh and Shayne Graham as unrestricted free agents. They also had plenty of cap space, yet the decided to franchise Graham, and let Housh go. They could have easily tagged Housh, and just sign Graham to a larger contract. They are a franchise that would rather have no cap floor then a cap ceiling.

Adam, do you know if we can restructure contracts to move more of the payout to this year since there is no cap? I'm wondering if it is possible so that when the cap comes back, we will be in even better shape.

I'm not Adam, but I know many teams are going to be dumping salary because there won't be a cap hit for doing it next year.

Some of the one's I've heard that are pretty sure to be cut are

Antrell Rolle
Lito Sheppard
Landanian Tomlinson

Any restructuring of contracts will still end in the team paying the player whatever he's owed. They may be in better shape when an eventual CBA is reached and salary cap reintroduced, but they still have to pay the person. You can also likely be in better shape by either cutting or buying out a contract that may, in a capped year, give you a bigger cap hit than usual. I could see Jerry doing something to this effect if he knew that a cap was coming. The thing is Jerry has signed some good players that are willing to restructure their contracts even during the season so that they are a smaller cap hit, ie. Ware, Davis, Romo. That's a good thing that you have players willing to move money around.

I could very well see the NFL playing the 2010 season without a cap and come the offseason after they put something together before the March 5, 2011 deadline of a lockout. And if this does happen and for some reason Roy Williams does not perform, I could see Jerry Jones cutting him to save future cap space in addition to other toxic contracts before a cap is implemented (Jerry usually is smart enough to know when this NFL stuff happens).
