No. He was in the bottom third of the league in FG% and second-to-last in XP% among kickers with at least 20 XP attempts. That is not average, that is bad. He was one of the league's worst FG kickers by any metric.

Lirim doesn't have great length to his game.

It is dependent on what the Cowboys think is going to be their thesis this year. If the offence is going to sputter this year, then they are going to need a good placekicker who has length. They will need every single point they can get.

The important part of this video is watch the body language of the teammates on the sidelines.

That terrible miss made it impossible for Fassel to defend Garibay in front of the rest of the team. If that kick was from 67 yards away everyone would have been clapping as an appreciation of "good try" and encouragement.

The fact this was an XPA makes it an indefensible situation for the coaching staff.

Lirim has to be at a minimum 83% to be league average. Jonathan needs to get out of camp. At some point this is just bad for his mental health. He doesn't need to be put up on the pedestal anymore. Get the spotlight off of him, and see if he has something for next year.

still say he is and was better then most of the current option and really the entire NFL..next opinion..

yet hes with the jets didn't last long , again to all of you elite players stop at top 3-5 at all positions the rest this is how you fill roles..there arent a ton of great kickers aviailble even on current rosters. Most are in Gregs wheel house..are we not finding this out we are about to ,most likely try 6 kickers before we land on oine about the same level as GZ..just saying, its the reality,,.id rather talk about the OL, WR, and DE comps we got going on this is boring. Its the kicker YO!

Don't care. This has to be the one reliable position on the whole team you just don't have to worry about.

So no, bringing back Mr. Z would be a terrible idea. And yes, put all the effort necessary in the search for that reliable kicker. Otherwise it will cost you. And I'm not talking 50+ yards fgs here. Just convert the damn PATs!

Gee, if the Cowboys are being constantly excused for all these things, no wonder we have been going nowhere for almost three decades.
 
Sounds like Garibay got waived yesterday. For him I sensed it was mental. He had the physical skillset to get it done. But there was too much going on in other parts of his life, and he was unable to separate it from football.

Sad, those opportunities don't come around often. I hope he keeps grinding at it, and finds himself with another team in the future.

He was talking about how he'd rather be too prepared and never get the opportunity than be unprepared at an inopportune time.

That's probably the most difficult aspect about the NFL for a lot of players who have enough physical ability. That part is really only like 30% of the game, anyway, I'd say. But it's probably the most important part. When a player really has what it takes between the ears it can really make the difference in leveling up that player's impact for his team. Tony Romo and Drew Henson are good examples of just how much more important the mental aspect really is.

On a side note, I've never seen anything quite like Garibay, that I can remember, before this camp. The guy was 15 of 16 in college. And he had a 62-yard game winner.

I grew up around professional scouts (MLB), so I think I have a pretty good basic understanding of how NFL scouts look at players. But I truly wouldn't know what to look for in a kicker other than how many he can make from how far compared to others I've seen. Other than that, I, personally, honestly wouldn't know what I'm looking at.

You assess kickers the same way a golf swing coach does a pro golfer. Similar challenges. The mental game tends to affect your physical approach to a mechanical action.

I didn't know there was extra baggage to Jonathan's camp this year. That is too bad, and one hopes he can regain his mojo, and find his way back into the league.

I think where a lot of the fans are is they are looking for some form of minimum bar of reliability.

We all can acknowledge that coming off an injury is tough for kickers, but it's not like Greg's career troubles with the XPAs and FGs under 45 are well known in Dallas.

His two worst years with XPAs occurred in Dallas. HIs two years in Dallas were his third and fourth worst FG % years in his 10 year career. His worst year was his rookie year when he was learning to be a pro and not just try to wind up and kill the ball. HIs second worst year he suffered a hip flexor strain and a groin injury.

Coming into Dallas he still has the professionalism inside of him. That won't go away, but he is struggling with consistency, and it's not getting better.

He still has his power as shown by 2021 being his best year with kickoff touchback percentage since the rule change.

But he is missing short FGs. So it is safe to say the mental part of his game needs sharpening. As a 10 year pro this is a bit of a problem, and the fan base has already suffered through a Vanderjagt/Bailey type decline so it is no wonder why there are questions.
 
Hard to believe, just on my HS team we had 3 guys could do way better than that.
 
Such a high paying job like NFL kicker ought to have more competition, where are all the kickers?
