Our Defense is Like a Baseball Pitcher in Game 1

I use a Baseball Pitcher in describing our Defense in Game 1. In Baseball the game has 27 outs--9 innings X 3 0uts. Let's say the pitcher records 27 strikeouts. Wow that sounds great just like the 6 turnovers for our Defense but when one takes a closer look at the games in total you see a somewhat different picture.

Yes the Pitcher struck out 27 but in between those outs there were 10 homers hit so he lost the game--not so great. While The Boys won the game, the 6 turnovers are overshadowed in large part by the 450 yds passing and overall poor play of the secondary, resulting in the team holding on for dear life at the end. Overall not so great.

The FO decision to only keep 4 CBs on the Roster I believe was a very bad mistake. Based on what Broaddus said, they don't plan on bringing anyone in, which would compound the first mistake. NFL is just to big for Mo.

So what you're saying is....

(Btw your analogy makes no sense. no pitcher is going to pitch 9 innings while giving up 10 homers. Nor will any pitcher gives up 10 homers and strikeout every other batter. )

This analogy is like a soccer game. It sucks. =P

On your topic though, everybody watching the game saw the same things you saw. It wasn't a perfect defensive game, and you can't count on those turnovers every week. Our offense also has to sustain some drives too though and put up TDs off those turnovers, which they didn't do very well either. Either way, a win is a win.

bad comparison, Dallas won and The GIants were behind the entire game so those 450 yards passing are way inflated.

I do kind of agree with you on the 4 corners thing, I would have felt much better about keeping Sterling Moore as the 4th CB and Webb as the 5th but I don't think it was a terrible decision either.

I can't believe how many people are jumping on board with this "Claiborne is too small for the cover 2" business. Where was all this before the games started and more specifically, before he got injured? Let me help -- it didn't exist. Now the guy gets hurt making a tackle, someone comes up with idea that he can't handle the physical nature of the position and all at once, everybody is an expert on the Cover 2 and is on board with the notion that Claiborne is too small to play in this scheme, with many even suggesting we should try and trade the guy. It's really kind of funny.

As for the whole corner thing, I wouldnt be surprised to see a vet, maybe even Moore, brought in at some point, even if the brass says they are not going to do that. Moore would have made a lot of sense because he could play safety as well in a pinch, I dont really understand why they let him go.

The big play did hurt this defense. We are going to see teams be able to move the ball on us in between the 20's. This is going to be an opportunistic defense, not really a shut down defense.

If a pitcher gives up 10 HR's, he wouldn't be left in the game to K 27 batters.

How about that curveball? :)

I'd say you've got that backward. The 450 yards passing were overshadowed by the turnovers and defensive touchdowns. The defense allowed a net 17 points. If you do that, you should win most of the time.

Isn't the Tampa 2 a bend but don't break. In between the 20's they will try and get you to make a mistake but once in the redzone confound the offense and make them settle for 3
